According to this, there is an interline agreement between TAM and JetBlue, which I found out when I recently booked TAM for BUR-GRU travel. I was routed through JFK on the return, and flew JetBlue from JFK-BUR (all the other flights were on TAM).

Unfortunately, when I checked in at GRU, I was only given a boarding pass only for the first leg of the flight (ie on TAM to JFK). Although I had over 2 hours between flights, by the time I got through JFK Immigration and Customers and then found the JetBlue terminal and then checked in and went through security, I barely made my connecting flight.

So ... does the interline agreement really not deal with baggage and connecting flights, or was I just unlucky?

As everyone needs to collect luggage when entering the US (Even on the same airline), there is no point of interlining in this case

Normally, you get to throw your luggage back onto a conveyor right next to Immigration, plus you don't need to check back in on the domestic connecting flight. I often fly back to LAX via a domestic entry point like ORD on international flights because its easier to go through immigration in ORD than LAX, even with the requirement to pick up my bags at ORD and then throw the luggage on the conveyor - yeah, LAX immigration is that bad.

So, this business of not being checked all the way through my return itinerary was a bit of a shock when I hit JFK and realized that I was on my own.

That is Not only at jfk but jfk is one of the airports where you can't interline int to dom if multiple Terminals are involved iirc

Since international flights at JFK are mostly segregated into the international terminal, the implication of your recollection is that virtually no international flights are interlined at JFK, and so my experience would be typical for flights from South America and other international airports that require a connection at JFK.

I do not see TAM on interline list: http://www.jetblue.com/flying-on-jetblue/travel-agents/codeshare.asp

Anyway - both LAN/TAM and jetBlue will be on the same platform (SABRE) as from as mid-2012 (jetBlue-LAN) or early 2013 (jetBlue-TAM) - before this upgrade both LAN and TAM will still use Amadeus (and Iberia ResIber as the host system for LAN).
