Travel Photography - What is a good camera to replace the Canon G9?

What camera can you recommend as a replacement to the Canon G9? I'm not really pleased with the G9 due to lack of features unlike today's cameras. What would be a good replacement in terms of image quality, HD video, etc? I would like something not as bulky, same or better features, have a better zoom and I am able to hold the camera in any position for video recording. I’m not interested in the G series since they are bulky. What I mean by holding the camera in any position is some designs have a weird design where you cant really have a good grip on the camera i.e. The Canon PowerShot SX230 HS. I’m not just looking for Canon. Other brands are ok with me as well as long as they are about the same with the G9 or better. Thanks for any suggestions. Cheers :)

Canon S95 and S100 have the same sensor as the G9. S100 is the newest with the most features (HD video, GPS, etc.). Both these cameras are much smaller and not nearly as rugged as the G9.

Neither have quite the zoom as the G9 but they are, again much smaller. The G11 is great but expensive and has less zoom than the G9.

I have been told that the Canon Powershot S95 is AMAZING. I am looking into a small point and shoot camera for my trips and can't afford the S95...however, if I could, that would be the one I'd get. It has excellent reviews on Amazon. I'm a Canon girl through and through and love my DSLR...but obviously, it would be very noticeable if I was taking photos with my DSLR on my trips (in airports, planes, etc)

I would like the camera to have the same zoom or better than the G9. I'm not sure if the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V is a good replacement. Also, physically having a good grip on the camera is also a priority for me as I like to take videos most of the time. I don't want to hold the camera in awkward positions! :D

I would also take a look on the Fuji X10. It has all the manual controls you need like the G9, but should be a little thinner. And the great thing: It has an even bigger sensor.

After much debate, I just ordered the Canon S95 last night. I was looking for a high quality pocket sized camera to go with my super zoom..

I narrowed my choices down to the Panasonic LX5 & Canon S95. The Canon won due to size.

What about the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V or Nikon Coolpix S8200, Nikon Coolpix S9100? Anyone have any personal reviews on these mentioned?

Good luck...let us know how it is...I just bought a Panasonic Lumix ZS9 due to my price restrictions but the Canon S95 would have been my camera of choice. I'd love to see what you think of it.

If you are reluctant to purchase S95 over pricing, absolutely consider a used S90. (or a used S95 for that matter, as it has been succeeded by S100)

125-150$ on the market.

The only upgrade from S90 to S95 was 720p video, and a few software-controlled features (built in HDR, more image stability, etc), all of which i never use.

The main features of the line -- the ample sized sensor, bright lens, control ring, fabulous build quality, intuitive controls, fast operation -- are all the same on S90.

They are by all means fabulous cameras. I just bought a fancy leica-rangefinder-inspired Fuji X100, but due to a few quirks and also the size consideration, i have a strong feeling ill return to the S90 often

Thanks for that little tip. I am trying a Panasonic Lumix ZS9 that has excellent reviews on Amazon but if I don't like it I will definitely consider looking into the S90 because I really love the looks of that line.

I strongly second the S90; it is a fantastic little camera. My main shooter is a Nikon D300 and I just love the S90 as a handy second option.

Below are a couple of shots taken with it in what I consider pretty challenging conditions:

G1X (http://www.dpreview.com/news/2012/01/09/CanonG1X_Preview) perhaps?

G1X is G1eXpensive.

Sony NEX-5N with lens costs about the same but can a LOT more, such as HD video 1080p/60 and can fit other lens mounts with a $20-$40 ebay adapter.

When is is too bulky, consider the $430 Canon Powershot S100. Excellent videos (1080p/24, 720p/30), 3200 ISO photos are nearly without grain.

check amazon.com for reviews for point and shoots and compare.

Good advice. You can even search by price range. For my price range (0-150) the camera I got was the best reviewed camera and that's how I landed it. Otherwise I wouldn't have known about it at all since I"m a die hard canon freak.
