I'm trying to save some money by flying premium economy rather than business but my wifereally likes to have her legs elevated with a foot rest.

We just tried QF premium economy and the seat pitch was fine etc, but the foot rests weren't very good,

How does the Virgin Australia footrest compare? Can you stretch out and have your legs raised?

If you're referring to VA's premium economy on its 777 fleet, then I'm afraid there are no leg rests, just foot rests (like in economy).
QF's premium economy seats are the same business seats used domestically. Pretty uncomfortable.

Even though VA lacks the leg rest in Y+, I found it surprisingly good. Though in the case of your wife you will have to go in J.

Also, depending on your location (I'm assuming you're in the US), there are some good J (called instant upgrade) fares with EK to Australia -yes the long way that could be a better value.
