It'll be tight, and obviously you're going to have to hope your SA flight is on time. You may want to try the baggage wrapping service and check the case through all the way to BKK. Not too expensive and it may give you peace of mind. I'm not sure if class of service is really relevant for your question, unless you're wondering how long the lines will be for check-in with TG at JNB. lfccjc1 Dec 29, 11, 4:44 am Thanks, I will use the wrapping service and risk it. Cheetah_SA Jan 4, 12, 7:02 am In theory you should have enough time in JNB to re-check (and being in C you'd be first off the aircraft and have a shorter line for check-in) but it doesn't allow for anything to go wrong - like a delayed arrival. But perversely, the shorter your transfer time the less likelihood that the thieves will have time to rummage through your luggage. I usually re-check at JNB but in this instance would through-check. And I agree with the wrapping idea as an additional safeguard. jsnydcsa Jan 6, 12, 12:52 pm But perversely, the shorter your transfer time the less likelihood that the thieves will have time to rummage through your luggage. I usually re-check at JNB but in this instance would through-check. And I agree with the wrapping idea as an additional safeguard. We were just through JNB and I noticed for the first time (I think it was in the January Sawubona) there was a discussion of a big increase in anti-theft efforts by ACSA and stakeholders (I HATE that word). I also happened to notice out the lounge window that, as a luggage crew came out of the belly of a Mango flight, they were (lightly and not too seriously) frisked by someone who looked to be in some position of authority. So, there's some slight evidence efforts to possibly stem the tide. And FWIW, our CPT-JNB-IAD bags (many brand new, not wrapped) sat somewhere in the belly of JNB for about 4 hours during our layover and, though locked with TSA openable locks, all 9 of 'em (don't ask) were untouched and unopened and there was some fairly interesting (e.g. worth stealing) stuff. Not super high $ value but worth it nonetheless (alcohol, costume jewelry, camera and computer accessories - lens cleaners, mouse, etc.) Untouched. johan rebel Jan 8, 12, 7:30 am a big increase in anti-theft efforts.Maybe, but such efforts have been announced (and for all I know perhaps even implemented) any number of times over the years.
