Happy Holidays to All,

Is it better to stay on Hong Kong Island or Kowloon (or both) when in Hong Kong? I was looking at either the Peninsula or IC on Kowloon but have not chosen anyhting on HK Island? Any suggestions/ Thanks.

Well, the view is better from the Kowloon side. The IC harbour view rooms/suites will offer stunning views. Of course, the Peninsula is a great choice too.

Hong Kong Island - I have stayed at the Conrad and it's a lovely hotel. The Four Seasons is lovely too.

There are excellent hotels on both sides, the view from Kowloon (TST more specifically) is better. The Mandarin Oriental, Landmark MO, and JW Marriott are popular island-side 5* hotels in addition to the ones already listed and the Ritz is another Kowloon-side. The MO is my favourite hotel in HK but the Conrad seriously impressed me.

I personally favour island-side but if you haven't seen the view of HK island from Kowloon you owe it to yourself to stay in TST.

As always thanks for all the expert advice and input. Does anyone have any knowledge about the Langham Hotel in Kowloon?

Very good hotel and nice location in TST, near Star Ferry. Just no views.

The views are nicer from Kowloon but there is much more to do on the island side and it is easy to get to Kowloon if you need to. We've always stayed at the Conrad and like the accessibility of Pacific Place. The MTR for exvursions and the walk anywhere location on most days.

You asked about the Langham, so I told you about the Langham. Langham Place in Mongkok is new and modern and nice; whether you like the area is another matter. Rooms will have good city view, as it's one of the tallest building in Mongkok (other than the office tower next to the hotel in the same complex).

Thanks! Would you have a view of the harbor and HK Island from the Langham Place in Mongkok?

LP in Mongkok rise above the "concrete" jungles of high rise and if you book club level or rooms on the high floors (especially mid 20's up) and you will have excellent view toward the towering RC in the sky, the harbour & the island, assuming that smog & clouds aren't at play.

It's a short 5 minutes to Ladies Market, 10 minutes to Temple Street Night Market, MTR entrance in the Shopping Complex below & plenty of eatery and restaurants all around, and steps away from busy Nathan Road shops.

The rooms are relatively small by US standard but average to bigger than usual by HK standard, guests get to use of a free iphone with local sim card for free local calls & web browser (no SMS) as part of the stay and "free" broadband access. Popular with oversea TA booking customers as part of an upgraded package. What I advise to friends 1st. time visiting for more than a few days to split their booking, a few days at one hotel and then move to 2nd. hotel for the rest of the duration, just to experience & compare - and, stay both sides of the busy city.

You can get from one side to the other in relatively short order for the princely sum of HK$2.5 on the ferry. For a first trip, I'd probably pick Tsim Sha Tsui for the view - it is truly one of the world's great skylines, even with all the haze these days :(

TST and the Star Ferry is on the southern tip of Kowloon directly facing HK island. A quick MTR ride to Tsim Sha Tsui station will get you there. It's one of HK's most bustling areas like Mong Kok. Many big hotels are in TST, like the Ritz, IC, Grand Stanford, Holiday Inn, Sheraton and the Peninsula. I'd strongly recommend TST for at least a couple nights for a first time stay in HKG. You can try Mong Kok or Central later.

The Ritz isn't in TST. It is in West Kowloon, also known as Yau Tsim Mong.

West Kowloon is not the same as Yau Tsim Mong. Yau Tsim Mong is simply the combined larger area of - from North to South - Mong Kok, Yau Ma Tei and Tsim Sha Tsui. West Kowloon is the newly developed area to the west of Mong Kok, Yau Ma Tei as well as Jordan.

I feel Kowloon, especially the areas around Temple St and Mong Kok are more local "Hong Kong".

It is very vibrant, especially at night.

Fair enough. Much of TST is also in Yau Tsim Mong, and the Ritz Carlton (and the entire Kowloon station complex) are in Yau Tsim Mong, but the Ritz Carlton is not in TST.
