I have a 5 day stopover in Brazil en route to my final destination of S. Africa, where I will stay 2 weeks. For now my plan is to stay 5 days in Rio, but I'm wondering if I should stay 3 days in Rio instead and the other 2 at Iguazu Falls. Any suggestions? It's my first time in Brazil. I'm traveling by myself, and I'm also planning to visit Victoria Falls later on.

The 3-2 plan may be ok. Though for Iguazu you must stay 2 entire days, 1 for the Argentina side and the other for the Brazil side. And 2 days in Rio is enough for a basic overview (Corcovado, Sugar Loaf, beaches within the city and downtown).

January may be a bit rainy in Rio, don't know about Iguazu. When are you going?

I will be there mid March. Thanks!

Your itinerary sounds well balanced. Iguazu Falls is indeed worth your time as it layout is entirely different from that of Victoria Falls. Put simply, Iguazu is particularly awe-inspiring for its breadth, while Victoria Falls is more famous for its immense drop.

Have a great trip!

^ Agree entirely with this. It would be great to do some nightlife in Rio as well, but that can wait until you have more time.
Should definitely see the Falls on both sides.

Visit the Iguazu falls at any cost, it will be the highlight of your trip. As previously mentioned, you must do both sides of the falls. Each offer unique experiences and views. I have been there 3 times and will be going again later in the year.
