I recently flew ATH-FRA-AMS and back with a LH ticket, and three of the the four flights on LH metal; the fourth was on a code-share with A3. I don't really know why, but I decided to credit the miles to my M&M account. What a surprise, when I checked the miles balance upon return! While the three LH flights yielded 750 + 25% miles (status), the fourth, code-shared FRA-ATH flight brought me 125 miles. I know, I am to blame for not reading the details in LH's pages, but still.
Now, had I credited everything to M&B, what would have the result been? Hah! The first three flights would have gotten 0 miles (due to booking fare used on LH), while the fourth one should have gotten 1000 miles! Oh, after all, I should be glad that I didn't check the A3 rules either and charged to M&M.
Bottom line: It may be better to change the program credited, at the last moment (lounge or gate) depending on the miles one gets for the specific leg. Of course one would have to read all conditions, just to make sure. Finally, is the hassle worth it for just a few thousand award miles collected? (I do have more than I can spend)
