Ok I really despise all the people who show up at the gym for the first 3 weeks of January, but this seems like a good topic of discussion.
Anyone have any big things they're planning for 2012? Drop weight, finish a race, etc?
As for me, I hope to be injury-free in 2012. We'll see how that goes. Otherwise, mostly keep up with what I've been doing, eat sensibly, workout, do some running/swimming races. Maybe get back into triathlons and do one of those.

I plan to forgive myself for not having an ambitious plan :-).
I'd like to drop weight, I'd like to enter more races, I'd like to keep to a more consistent and ambitious training schedule, but if those things don't happen, I'd like to forgive myself.

I'm not big on resolutions, in part because I always seem to break them. However, I'm going to try to focus on increasing my activity level, and adding more fruits and veggies into my diet.

Exercise for at least 30 min./day, at least 3 x per week.
Limit consumption of products containing wheat.
Oh, and drink more water!

Get my sorry butt back in shape. Eat better, exercise more. Yes, I've got a plan but right now trying to get stuff done before heading out for the holidays, so that's the short version.
Cheers.

I need to focus more on diet. The exercise part, for me, is easy....I plan to continue working out as much as I have been (6-10 hours/week). A second round of P90x I'm thinking to take me through until biking season starts back up.
Diet....ugh. I just need to eat better and less more consistanly!

This month has been a write off with so many holiday events. Will try to get back on the health kick. As for travelling and health maybe
-not eat bacon and saussage every day at the breakfast buffet
-working out in the morning if on the road as the post workday workout often gets cancelled
-trying to run outside more in places that i'm familiar with when on business travel

Not big on resolutions...but I do echo the sentiments about those who will show up at the gym for 3 weeks beginning next Tuesday or Wednesday...many of whom I will not see by March.
That said, my hope is for continued good health that permits me to work out regularly. Just signed up for my spin class next week...with it being January, I'll have to do so right at 7 days out for the next month!

Sometime in September, I realized that I could make it to 225 workouts on the year. I hit that today. Next year, I'm going for 250. It's not a resolution, though, because I don't keep my resolutions.

I've been travelling and recovering from injuries for the last year, so I'm not happy with my weight or, more important to me, my fitness level.
Hit the gym today. It was very empty, so I pulled up a 75-minute video of the Leadville 100 race to pass the time while I was on the stair-climber.
That got me motivated. The gym is means to an end - the end being what I can do outside the gym. Time to start reading 'active' magazines (Bicycling, Runner's World, etc) at the gym and to start planning active holidays again.

I like the idea of resolutions, even if they are normally broken. It's good to reflect on what works and what doesn't and try to do something about it. For me, I'm with annerj: I exercise plenty but my diet stinks. I eat too much garbage, drink too much, etc. Previous attempts to eat better and drink less have worked for periods of time, but I inevitably find myself back to the good stuff (red meat, wine, etc.). So, I'm not going to try to limit myself in those areas, as I feel that is a losing cause, but rather focus on quality. More grass-fed organic beef, less skin with the chicken, etc. Small changes that might add up to something substantial.
I also am back to keeping track of what I eat. I find that helps.

I'd like to lose 10 pounds down to where my 5 pound daily fluctuations max out at 150.
I'd like to be able to run 5 miles easy at 8 minutes per mile. Currently running 4 3x a week at 10 mpm, so we'll see.

Thanks to the OP for starting this thread. It reminded me that I meant to include more nuts in my diet. I was for a while (triggered by another
FT thread in this forum!), but travel and other things interfered and somehow I quit doing so.
My diet is chronically too low in fats, including healthy fats. Just came home from the market with a big bag of nuts. I'll put them on the counter and eat a handful every day. I tend to back off on the starches if I get some healthy fat in my diet.

Probably another thread but I agree with this 100%. I workout so I can do "STUFF". The highlights of my year are our fitness vacations (races, rides, climbs, whatever)....it makes all the gym time worth it to me.

A few years ago in the women's forum (and then a private board) we had a thing going where we picked goals in 3 categories: diet, exercise, life. So (for example) it might be exercise 3x/week for 30 days, drink 8 8-oz water, or stick to xx calories, or get some type of healthy food (fill in the blank), read a book per week or reach out via phone or Skype to xx friends/week, etc.
That model worked for me, so think I'm going back to that.
Cheers.

I like that idea a lot. Feel free to share when you set your goals.
Book a week.....I like that idea too! My goal would probably be more like book a month :(. Reading is one of the things that has suffered most in my life with time constraints.

I disagree with this. For me, I take pleasure both in dance workouts and in walks, while I'm doing them.
As for 2012 goals, I let a friend talk me into doing the Susan G. Komen 3 Day Walk in Boston in July. She didn't have to twist my arm very hard, since she's someone I first met doing the walk in L.A. in 1999 (when Avon / Pellotta Teamworks ran it.) So getting back up to being able to walk 60 miles is my focus.

Time sure moves fast....already a month into the new year.....any updates?
I've continued to workout as planned (the easy part) and I'd say my diet is marginally better (the hard part) with high hopes of making it even better.

I'm a little shaky on my resolution to work out 3x/wk. for at least 30 min./session. I think I only exercised twice in each of the last two weeks. But better than not at all.
I feel like I've slipped a bit on the wheat thing, too. Time to refocus there.
I have definitely been drinking more water (and less beer). All good on that front.

Yes, unfortunately I already broke my very first resolution to remain injury free :(
Rather than bore everyone with the gory details, I'll just say that what I intended to be a short easy relaxing run ended up sour.
The good thing is that I'm prepared for injury now. I keep a supply of Ace bandages, Neosporin, Bactine, other bandages, gauze pads, medical tape, ice packs, and everything else...and they have all come in handy (and have already re-stocked for the future). Just need to make sure I give myself time to get better. I'll probably ease back into upper body weights Friday, so long as my hands are feeling ok (yes it was an all-over body injury, from running).
And I think that's it for me and running. It was a good relationship while it lasted, but I think we need at least a separation now.

Is this the same stress fracture injury or something new?

Actually something brand new. While running with my dog last Saturday, I rolled my ankle and fell, and I think she dragged me along briefly.
Along with a sprained ankle (on the same foot as the stress fracture, the opposite foot of my previous sprained ankle), I have many cuts/scrapes/bruises on my hands and legs.
At least having the leash wrapped around my right hand prevented that from getting too much.
Of course Holly (the dog) is fine. She seemed to wonder why we had stopped so abruptly.

Yikes! Hope you get to feeling better soon after that fall!
Aren't dogs wonderful? One of mine once managed to pull me down so that I sprained both ankles at once.
