Hilton HHonors - 50% bonus in lieu of airline vs 50% bonus if Diamond???

I read some posts about this option, but I can't seem to find the answer to my question. Forgive me if I missed it.

I recently opted for the 50% more base points in lieu of airline miles as I am trying to gain as many points as possible in a short amount of time for an award.

Question: I will be a Diamond in two weeks...should I then canel this option and start redeeming my airline credit again when I am Diamond? Or...is this a different type of credit.

It seems as if it would be the same 50% and it would be a waste to have this feature when I am Diamond, but I can't tell for sure.

Thanks.

The bonus in lieu of airline miles is on top of your Diamond Tier bonus.

Let's just say you stay at a hotel for one night at 100 US (including all taxes and other charges).
Your base points will be: 100 * 10 = 1000
Diamond Tier bonus: 1000 * 50% = 500
Bonus base points in lieu of miles = 500
Total = 2000 base points

You cannot cancel the 50% bonus option once it is elected. It will remain in place until the promotions end.

That's not correct. I've switched back and forth depending on length of stays. No trouble with miles or bonus points posting.

Yes..I definitely knew I could change back to the airline bonus, but know that I know that the Diamond status will be different 50% points, I'm sticking with it until the end anyway.

Thanks....great information.

Seems like this is valuable for long stays, but not sort stays. 500 miles is worth more than 500 HH points. You get miles only once for a stay. If you had a long stay and it was a more expensive hotel then 50% of that might be worth more than 500 miles.

It depends on your situtation. I have way more miles right now then I could easily use, so the miles mean absolutly nothing to me. Even if they offered 5,000 per stay it wouldn't make a difference. I'm earning miles faster then I can use them up.

I can, however, use more hotel points, so the extra points has some value to me.

Huh?
You must be kidding? If you earn the miles on AA and a couple of other airlines you can trade them in at the rate of 1 for 2. So in your example you claim you would rather have the hotel points even if the double dip was for 5,000 miles. 5,000 miles trade = 10,000 Hilton Points or you can get a 50% bonus. You might want to rethink your strategy.

I also think this whole promotion is a way that Hilton is testing the water to see if they can eliminate the double dip. I'll take the miles Thank You.

Not me....I'll take the points...my stays are usually 5 or sometimes even 6 days long therefore at a rate of $150/night I earn an extra 3750/4500 points...I'll take that compared to a paltry 500 miles anytime http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Ditto, except I'll qualify that with "based on my travel plans through the end of the promotion period."

That is exactly what you are suppose to do with longer stays; however, when you have a one night stay for $79, you should get the airline miles for maximum earning opportunities.
