In Dutch only, sorry.

Translation:

As of this Thursday (22 December 2011) KLM increases its fuel surcharges on tickets to most destinations as follows:
- flights within Europe: EUR 3 per one way, total one way fuel surcharge now EUR 38.
- flights to North America: EUR 10 per one way, total one way fuel surcharge now EUR 125.
- flights under 9 hours to destinations outside Europe: EUR 5 per one way, total one way fuel surcharge now EUR 120.
- all flights over 9 hours to destinations outside Europe: EUR 10 per one way, total one way fuel surcharge now EUR 135.

On tickets to Cairo, Tripoli, Beirut and Damman the surcharge is not increased and remains at EUR 85 one way.
On tickets to other destinations to the Middel East and to India the surcharge is not increased and remains at EUR 115 one way.

The new, additional surcharge does not apply to tickets booked before Thursday 19 January.

The date above is not a typo from my part...

It's a bit weird to have an increase in fuel surcharge when fuel price is way lower than a year ot two ago... and definitely not on the rise

Since when did fuel surcharges have anything to do with fuel prices? ;)

High time for the EU to outlaw this so-called "fuel" surcharge!

reply from klm on facebook:

Hello, a declining oil price does not mean that our fuel costs are less. The oil price is just one of the factors. There are other factors to be considered, for example hedging. Also, we do not operate on pure oil, but on kerosene. That is why the fuel surcharge can’t be predicted by just following the oil price. KLM will always take all factors into account and will adjust the surcharge based on all developments.

For a breakdown of the current fuel surcharge see here (http://f.chtah.com/i/37/276565485/PN135_bijlage.pdf).

If a 747 flies 100km on 3.6 liters per pax... and even if you overestimate the cost of the fuel... it still does not add up... so it is and will be a scam full way to 'steal' money from clients...

The EU knows YQ is a scam. I download a reported prepared for the EC by a group, I can't find it right now, but it said all that we know. It won't be long before they act on it. I think we can reasonably assume the EU is not tucked up with the airlines like some governments.

When the fuel surcharge to Cairo or Amman is higher than the one to the US or Canada, one has to know that this is a rip-off.

Say no more,

Not necessarily. Perhaps the airport in Cairo charges much more for the ground crew filling up the plane.

And again, an increase:

* Normal increase:

Intercontinental:

- + E20 in Y
- + E80 in C

*Plus an additional increase in fuel surcharge:

European:
- + E3 per segment

Intercontinental:
- + E12 in Y per segment
- + E32 in C per segment

Flights to the Middle-East and India are exempted.

Just to get an idea...how much does a 737 or 747 gozzle per second/minute and are the fuel prices comparable to the ones we pay at the pump? I'm curious how much the gasoline actually costs per person per segment.

Of course it's impossible to calculate the exact amount, as take off will use much more than cruise...but we might be able to get a close estimate.

Average fuel burn rate for a 747 is 24k lbs per hour. Add triple that for take-off, a few lbs more for taxi and approx 600 lbs per hour for APU and you can work it out.. Jet fuel costs a little over 1000$ per ton.

But we all know that fuel surcharges are not related to the cost of fuel, at least not directly. It's an excuse to get some revenue on rewards tickets.
