Any information on this? . Considering a visit to Georgia, for the food and culture, etc but would like to fly back to Moscow. Apparently due to the political climate there are no direct flights, however there are plenty of flights from Sotchi to Moscow.
This would also give me an excuse to visit Sotchi. :D
Someone told me the border is closed to foreigners....

Someone told me the border is closed to foreigners....I recently read somewhere on couchsurfing.org that there have been reports on successful border crossings at Verkhniy Lars/Dariali by non-CIS nationals. So it might be true that the checkpoint was opened to nationals of all countries. This, however, is far from Sochi.
You also might try to go via Abkhazia (only in direction Georgia->Abkhazia->Russia). It is reported that this way is doable though for non-CIS nationals a certain hassle is needed to procure an Abkhazian visa. Georgians won't stop you from crossing the Inguri river into Abkhazia, and Abkhazians won't stop you from crossing at Psou into Russia. But technically leaving Abkhazia through Psou checkpoint makes you having committed a crime in point of view of Georgian law, so you may have problems if you arrive to Georgia next time.
There is also a ferry from Batumi to Sochi, but I am not sure if third-party nationals may use it.
PS. In any case flying via a third country would be simpler.

S7 has direct flights from Tbilisi to DME. One flight per day.
They can be booked on Expedia and other third party sites. Much cheaper to connect via IST or KBP though.
