Canada - Cheap bottled water: Edmonton Home Depot

Just got into YEG this morning from YUL.
For those that live here, I found a good deal while shopping at the Home Depot.
It's the one in the west end, with a Superstore nearby.
The water is $3.99.
AB deposit is normally 10 cents per bottle, but the total deposit for a case of 24 was 10 cents.
This leaves you with a net cost of $1.70/case of 24, or 7.0833333333333333333333333333333 cents per 500mL bottle.
This is cheaper than buying 5 gallons of water.
I called a friend, and he just bought 30.
My receipt was only for 3 because I need to get these to YVR somehow....

MODS: If this is the wrong thread, please move it to the right location. There aren't that many airlines that serve YEG other than AC & WS, so I thought that this was the right place.

This 37 year old thinks

a) paying money for water which has less regulatory oversight than the stuff that comes out of your tap is just ludicrous, and

b) wonders if you're just taking advantage of a pricing error by the retailer, which is less than honest.

But hey - that's just me. Go nuts schlepping your water back to Montreal.:p

I live in YVR actually. I was in YUL for a meeting.
My friend bought 10x more than I did.
The fact that nobody really cared that he bought so much was surprising to me.

You are quoting a price of 7.083 cents/500ml, or 14.166 cents/litre. So the cost of 1,000 litres (one cubic metre) would be 14.166 x 1,000 = 14,166 cents or $141.66.

In Toronto, I currently pay $2.28 per cubic metre for water delivered right into my house. I am sure the YVR price is not hugely different.

Exactly what is it about buying all that water that you find to be such a good deal at over 50 times the readily available price (not to mention shipping it from YEG to YVR)?

I was thinking that this water is cheaper than what Culligan will offer, and it is of comparable quality. When you are paying $5.99/5 gallons or 18.9 L of water, and this is much cheaper than that, then I would buy it.
That's what my boss pays for the water in the cooler anyways.....
14.166*18.9=$2.68/5 gallons or 18.9 L.

You're all comparing the price of bottled water to the price of tap water. When you see bottled water that is cheaper than this in Canada, let me know.
And, do you all really drink tap water?
Mods: please add the word 'bottled' to the title.

are these cases of water are being shipped back as checked baggage?

there's lots of OT threads but this is probably a bit much, if it was home hardware and AE points involved then it would be different ;)
(points earned from the CC shouldn't count)

i would recommend buying a water bottle instead of bottled water if possible, not too environmentally friendly

I recycle.

And, do you all really drink tap water?

Unless I'm in India/Africa/Other similar locale, yes, I drink tap water. The environmental cost of the bottled water industry is ludicrous, and it provides something that's no better than what's delivered to my kitchen for (comparatively) free.

I recycle.

Nice deal though. I know a few family members who wouldn't drink tap water but then we saw a documentary on bottled water and went right back to tap water (with a filter)

Shouldn't this be on the Red Flag deals forum? LOL

So it might be worse than I thought....
I'll just refund it later.
(Within 11 hr!)
There's an HD on YYC drive though, so I have a good opportunity to do so.
What concerns me is that this deal might go away if I refund.

Yes. Safer, more environmentally friendly and a whole lot cheaper (and I actually prefer the taste of Toronto tap water to most bottled waters).

Mine after deposit refund is only $1.70/24.
I presume that the Zellers says that deposit is extra and they didn't screw up on the calculations like the one on my receipt.

Hey OP, thanks for the info. I don't need bottled water from Edmonton, nor do I drink bottled water, but thanks anyway.

The OMNI (bordering on PR) replies from some of you are far more inappropriate than the OP informing the community of a good deal.

Why would you pay money for bottled water when YVR has some of the best tasting tap water in the world?

Really any city in Canada has great tap water. This is just a complete waste of resources.

IMHO no need to buy bottled water unless absolutely necessary. YVR has the best drinking water (from the tap) in Canada. Think of the cost of bring the bottled water back to YVR and the large carbon foot print. :( :td:

If I live in YQR, then I may have a different opinion on the water from the tap.

Bottled water is terrible for the environment. It's not just the plastic that of course as that can be recycled (just a day ago I bought a workout shirt made from recycled bottles :)) but there is the fuel and vehicles to transport it to the store and in your case the JETFUEL required to fly it to yvr!!! Just horrible. And yes, of course it's a computer glitch and not a deal!

Thanks everyone.
I'm at my house in YVR now, and I realized after drinking a glass of water from the tap, that it's not as bad as I thought it was. Infact, it's a lot better.
I wonder what my kids will say when they are my age, and when gas is $5+/L, how they felt about me flying 3 cases of water from YEG just to save a few dollars.
I'm just glad that my boss is willing to buy the water at the same price that I bought it.
And also that there were other pax on the plane willing to use the water as their checked luggage.
Now, what should I do with the few hundred dollars for next year that I'm not spending on bottled water?

Online, for about $140, from Pure Water Freedom I brought a 3 stage filter (sits on counter or under counter) that filters out Chlorine, Flouride, VOCs, and many other contaminents (I don't want cancer from these deadly industrial chemicals in my water "It's safe in small amounts" yeah right along with the PCBs, mercury, lead, pesticides, oil run off, etc which also are present - war on cancer 101 stuff here).

Filters should last for 1 year.

Edmonton prides itself on the quality of its tap water. As for the price OP paid, I find equally cheap offerings at Metro, Shoppers Drugs and other stores on a regular basis, and there is no bottle fee in Ontario AFAIK.

The subject line for this post is wrong - I thought it was about the cost of bottled water at YEG - Presumably after security.

Instead, it talks about bottled water deals in Edmonton.

I know I'm a lone voice on FT in this regard, but to me the airport code is the code of, yes, the AIRPORT. Bugs me when people talk about the city with the airport code - YEG is not Edmonton.

No deposit in Ontario, thus no need to waste time schlepping the bottles back for the refund. Only need to go as far as the blue box on the curb.
