Budget Travel - Need to make change to Spirit Air penny flight

I booked one of those super cheap flights on Spirit Air for our vacation (two adults and a child on the PNR) and my husband will need to go home three days before us for business stuff.
So... since the base price was $.01 on this flight I was figuring that paying a change fee so they could split the PNR and he can go home early aint gonna help me much in terms of a credit to future travel ( I don't know if they provide credit for the online booking fee, tax, airport fee, 9/11 fee, etc.. or for just the penny fare, but they change fee costs more than getting a new one way ticket for him).
Can/should I buy hubby a one-way (also on Spirit, as it's the cheapest thing going) for a few days earlier and my son and I still use the original return? We would all be travelling together on the outbound. Should I inform the airlines of this or will that just be an extra fee for me?
