Stayed at Porto Bay Rio Internacional earlier this month (Dec 2011 - Rio de Janeiro)

Pictures and video of my suite with view on Copacabana beach:

Thanks.

Thanks Bartla for the post. As a refugee from the rebranding of the Intercontinental, its good to see reports of alternatives. Is the beachfront view from your suite or from the rooftop pool?
The Sheraton Rio has treated me very well on my 2 stays this quarter but its nice to have options.

How much did you pay? In general we prefer Ipanema over Copacabana, and had a great view from our room the the Praia Ipanema Hotel, but it was not inexpensive (maybe R$350-400 though rates, of course, can fluctuate widely by season, what conventions are in town, etc.). The Copacabana Palace, the grande dame of beachfront hotels, is nice, but very expensive and some rooms are older, smaller.

Thanks for your feedback 3544quebec. The view is from my suite (1001). I recommend to ask for a higher floor as there's quite some noise from the traffic, even at the 10th floor.

I paid BRL465 via Octopustravel.com for superior room, but the suite had a rack rate of BRL2500. See my blog article for more details.

I prefer Ipanema as beach too, but except from Fasano (expensive!) I didn't see
many alternatives at Ipanema beach.

Thank you for posting. Great photos too.

We also are in search of someplace to stay in a few months time in Rio. We've tried a bunch of properties so far. All have tradeoffs. We also much prefer Ipanema or Leblon. Yet, except for the Fasano, with ridiculous pricing for the product delivered, there aren't many options there. The Cesar Park is in desperate need of updating. The 2 Marina properties also need overhauls. The Sheraton needed a complete overhaul ten years ago.

How was the area right around the Porto? Is the beach similar to Ipanema in terms of the crowd? The suite looks completely redone and could be a good option. Thanks.

Thanks for your feedback Flyr16. Porto is very close to Copacabana Palace.

A cheap alternative (at the other side of the accommodation spectrum) are the private rooms at The Mango Tree hostel. Just one block from Ipanema and very cozy to have breakfast with the other guests of the hostel. http://www.mangotreehostel.com/ Stayed there in 2009.
