Hello,

I'm planning my trip to Rome in late August and early September and I'm looking for a hotel near the Vatican that has good air conditioning. last time I was there the A/C was almost non-existent during the overnight hours.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

I normally try to stay in 4 star when I'm in Italy. Around or under 500 euros/night would be fine. Thanks for any help you can provide.

I usually don't recommend the Hilton b/c the location isn't ideal for site seeing, however - w/what you are willing to spend - and seeing that you are a HH Diamond, in late August I would seriously consider it. Excellent A/C and a beautiful pool area make it great location to beat the heat.

There is a lengthy thread (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/hilton-hhonors/463891-rome-cavalieri-waldorf-astoria-collection.html) about the pros (amenities, service) cons (location, cost) of the property in the Hilton forum.

Thanks Bdemaria. I was thinking of the Hilton for the reasons that you provide but the distance from the Vatican (and everything else) is giving me doubts.
I am open to any other suggestions.

Any thoughts on the Columbus, Paolo VI, or Palazzo Cesi?

Of those three, I'd probably go w/Paolo VI - however, since they are all in historic buildings you may well encounter the a/c issues you raised in your initial post.

We are also going to be in Rome in (mid) August, and we're looking for recommendations for somewhere to stay with our two teens (13 and 16). We definitely want air conditioning given the time of year, and a pool would be a great added bonus, but not necessary. This will be our first time to Rome, and after doing some initial searches on the web, I'm beginning to wonder if it's even possible to get a hotel room that will give us decent access to the major sites, including the Vatican, for $300 Cdn or less per night at this time of year. We prefer one quad room with 2 queen beds rather than two rooms so as to keep costs down, but we would also consider an apartment if we can get one for only 3-4 nights. Any recommendations?

There are far fewer hotels in the Vatican area than other parts of town. Many of the accommodations in this area are smaller B&B's and apartments. Looking at the Venere and Booking.com sites, the highest rated hotel in the area may be the Hotel Alimandi Vaticano, which is just across the street from the Vatican Museums entrance.

Yet some of the B&B's are quite luxurious. For recommendations of the best 40-50 accommodations near the Vatcian - as ranked by Venere and Booking.com guests, you might read this article: The Best Hotels and B&B’s in the Prati-Vatican Area (http://tinyurl.com/hotels-prati). It has a map of the ranked locations and plenty of photos.

There are many hotels in Rome that do have pools. Check out this link (http://tinyurl.com/hpools-rome)for a fairly complete list.

The Roma Cavalieri (http://tinyurl.com/roma-cavalieri) is a wonderful hotel, but rather isolated if you want to immerse yourself in the Roma lifestyle and culture. Unless you're prepared to "hike the hill" to reach local transportation, you'll be locked into the hotel shuttle service or using taxis if you choose this location. We've stayed there a few times (on points) and enjoyed our stay. But for first-timers to Rome, I'd recommend staying in a more centro location.

For a rate of "around or under 500 euros/night" you could stay at almost ANY posh hotel on Via Veneto, or in the centro area. Note that the "star" rating system in Italy does not reflect the level of quality as in other countriues, but rather the services a hotel may provide... such as a restaurant, concierge service, room service, elevator, etc. Good Luck!

How about a B&B? Whenever I had friends/family come visit they'd always stay at a B&B in my neighborhood called 'Your Nest in Rome' (http://www.yournestinrome.com/eng/index_eng.html). A good central location and you're not in the engulfed by tourists, at least not too much. As this is your first time in Rome, feel free to PM me with any questions you have or any suggestions you may want. Keep in mind that most Italians are on "Ferie" (Vacation) during the month of August. It helps to be in a major city but you should still expect a decent amount of shops, restaurants, cafes, etc. to be closed. You can probably find their owners on the beach ;)

Thank you for the recommendation! Yes, we'd definitely consider a B&B, so I'll look into this one. If there are any other recommendations out there for hotels or B&B's for a family of 4 in Rome, I'd love to hear them.

Nicky, FYI it is a 5mn taxi ride from Hilton to the Vatican considered that in August there is no traffic. it is a 30/35 mn walk

Columbus is basically in the Vatican and is an historical building, though.

I think both are good choices, but I'd bet the aircon works better at Hilton
