Business Class Award Reservation : Old Asiana 777 or UA Upper deck 747?
I'm not a Big Lover of United but the Old Asian 777 Business Class seats and IFE seems dated.
Appreciate Input...
Many Thanks

As I am flying YUL-ORD-ICN or NRT-BKK Adding another stop woud be just too much.
Thanks I appreciate your suggestion. But I need to decide as requested between New UA 747 Upper Deck and Old OZ 777. Also its an Award so availabilty is an important factor.
YOu might want to ask to have this thread moved to the UA forum. I'd bet you'd get a lot more input/responses.

I flew business class UA upper deck 747 from SFO to ICN, then business class Asiana 777 from ICN to SEA (older seats).
Surprisingly, UA was the better product. Obviously, the flat seats were fantastic but the video system was better, service was almost as good (it never is as good as the Asiana or KE service), and food was good enough. The Asiana seats were fine but not flat bed so it was a bit more uncomfortable and the video system was difficult to use and had less of a selection.
If I had the choice today, I would go UA upper deck vs older seats on Asiana 777.

I initially considered that, but thought United Forum would be sonewhat biased and I really want input of how Poor the Old OZ 777 Business Class seat is. Compared to what seems a much improved UA Business Class seat with the added Bonus of the Smaller Upper Deck on a 747.

This is just no comparison at all. UA 747 upper deck definately, and no I am not biased even though I am a UA flyer mostly.
If you are talking about UA new C vs NH old C, though I would choose NH instead, as even NH old C is not flat like UA new C, the angle when it recline is further compare with OZ and AVOD guranteed. OZ old C and no AVOD is just no deal. NH food in C is also better than OZ in C (especially more choices for mid-flight snack with NH C)

Am on a RTW Aeroplan reward ticket that routes me from YYZ to ORD on AC and then onwards to Seoul on Asiana 777.Travel November 2012
I could look to switch flight to SFO and connect or is there a reasonable chance of somewhat newer a/c in 11 months time?
....and chances of getting "quad smartium" seating ex ORD as I am booked in Business Class on all segments

Similar vein for me here but with a twist.. gamble for new C on a UA 777 from SEA or take the ride from ORD in Asiana with the slanted lie flats?

I had a similar choice to make as I will be doing a mni RTW in October with Mrs CC. I chose to bite the bullet and take AC J to SFO, overnight then OZ to ICN the next day with the Quad. Problem for me is the ICN to SYD leg seems to be on their old 777 product that has not yet been updated. Still 7 months to go, so I am crossing my fingers...:D

I really want input of how Poor the Old OZ 777 Business Class seat is. .
It's really not that bad, similar to seats on LH and TG, angled but still reasonably comfortable. If you get the plane with the looped AVOD, then this is poor - but I'm not interested in AVOD so this doesn't bother me.
The UA flat bed seat is better than the OZ seat, no question. But the UA service is lousy, and your decision should be based on how much you value service over the seat and AVOD.
If you plan to sleep and/or watch movies for the whole flight, then go with UA. If you want to enjoy quality service, albeit with a slightly angled seat, then go with OZ.
As I've posted here on several other threads with an almost identical topic, I would never pick UA over OZ, even if it was OZ's old business class and AVOD over UA's new business. Most of my colleagues are also of the same opinion.
There's also the possibility that you'll get the UA old business. I was on a UA flight last year from IAD to LHR and my original flight got cancelled and they put me on the next one, which was the old business class. Terrible seats and terrible service.

Old business class that means non-AVOD, videos in a loop. new busienss class is QS and AVOD. There are no two kinds of old C seats unless you are talking between 2 class and 3 class.

UA 's problem is not about the service, it is the food. UA's service is not lousy rather inconsistent like LH or TG, but with all the years (since 1998) travelling on UA extensively transpacific, 95% of my experience are actually good to excellent.

I don't see anywhere in my post where I said that there were two types of old business seat.

I've never travelled UA transpacific, but do so transatlantic three or four times a year. I would say that the service has varied between dreadful and the bare minimum acceptable. Maybe they put all of their great FA's on the transpacific routes.

You said "loop AVOD", which there is no such thing existed AVOD but in a loop. If mo
Either they are AVOD, or non-AVOD movies run in a loop.

I just did UA IAD-FRA too, excellent service, purser even arrange an escort for me when I arrived to direct me how to get to FCT.

I did indeed say looped AVOD - my mistake. I meant to say looped video or something like that.
I'm surprised that the service to FRA was so good. I normally fly LHR - IAD, where the service is consistently poor. The FA's do the bare minimum, and other than meal services spend most of their time reading magazines in the galley (apart from during turbulence, where they will come and top up your glass of water so that it spills everywhere).
And the added hazard with the LHR route is that there are four flights a day, only two of which have the flat bed seat. Meaning that in the event of IRROPS, you stand a good chance of ending up with an old style business seat - which is truly awful.

The two UA IAD-FRA flights were supposed to be old config all along up til 24 hours before checkin, but day of departure, both had swapped to new config.
