New York City - JFK question - Are the terminals open all night?

I am contemplating a run via HNL to JFK with an immediate turnaround. Arriving at around 1 a.m., return flight is at 6 a.m. Is the terminal open all night? Would I have to leave the sterile area?

You will be shunted out of Terminal 7 and told to go to Terminal 4. Attempts at staying in Terminal 7 will result in cleaning staff calling the police to escort you out. T7 opens again around 4/4:30AM.

http://www.sleepinginairports.net/usa/newyorkjfk.htmI do not think this is correct info :) ; I believe dsquared is correct. Altho I myself have not tried to spend the night in T7 at JFK, when I was helping a newbie plan her trip about 10 months ago, she had to leave T7 during the wee hours.

Then again .... I am basing my comments on what the rules were 10 months ago .... it would not be the first time I am wrong .... and we all know mods always are right! ;)

I've slept @ JFK before. Got kicked out of the UA (or was it DL) terminal. I forgot which terminal I was directed to, but I wound up there and was land-side.

If I recall, there is an Au-Bon-Pain, and near there, a rest/seating area with continuous seating, which makes it possible to lay out. Just get there early, or else the rest of the late night travelers will have taken the spaces.

I believe it is T4... but not 100% certain.

As part of my service to FT and ensure that accurate information is provided, I decided to do a field test.

I arrived on UA around 1 a.m. into T7. There were a number of cleaners/security types in the terminal to make sure everyone exited into the baggage claim area. They were also doing a test of the fire alarm system (strobes and sirens) so sleeping in the terminal would not have been an option.

I took the AirTrain over to T4 and found my way over to the food court at the arrivals level. There is a Peet's Coffee there that is open 24 hours and found a padded bench in the adjacent sleeping/seating area. There were about 30-40 people in the general area hanging out. There's some overnight construction going on in the terminal right around the food court involving jackhammers so sleeping wasn't in the cards for me.

Took the AirTrain back to T7 around 4:45 a.m. to check in for my flight and hang out in the lounge which opened at 5.

Thanks! ^ I've cross-referenced a related thread in the OP. That thread is also available in the Sticky.

I have a "crazy colleague" that is planning on flying into JFK around 12:35 am on AA then flying OW internationally the next am. He is an EXP.

Is it possible for him to arrive in Terminal 8 stay airside and wait until the Flagship lounge opens at 5am before going to the other terminal for his flight?

He can't justify a 4 hour or so leaving the terminal and just get some work done instead....

Thanks....

No, he cannot stay airside, and the Flagship Lounge closes by 11:45pm (right after the last departure to LHR). Thereafter, the Terminal 8 secure area shuts down until about 4:30am (or whenever the TSA checkpoint re-opens). Security patrols are regular, and any passenger who loiters airside after the last flight departure will be asked to leave the area by contract security personnel.

However, Terminal 4 has 24-hour passenger facilities located landside that include restaurants.

The above two posts have been moved here from another thread that was regarding an individual itinerary.
