Hong Kong and Macau - Anyone hike from Ngong Ping to Tung Chung?

I saw on TripAdvisor that you're suppose to be able to hike all that way.

When I took the cable car, I did see a winding path beneath the path of the cable car. Seemed like it would be long and grueling.

Not sure the views from the ground would be as good as on the cable car.

The last part of the cable car is descending towards Tung Chung, over a body of water, before taking a right turn towards the terminus of the cable car.

How would you traverse that on foot?

From the Crystal Cabin I could see people making the hike. No idea how long it takes but it looked long and grueling. Most were in groups but I did see a few solo hikers with a ton of gear.

Yes it is a hike, a real serious hike. Not a simple stroll.

It was a one full day affair when I did it as part of Boy Scouts activities way back.

You can get details by googling the hike limiting the results to .hk.

There are two trails between Tung Chung and Ngong Ping. The one you saw under the cable car route was built to support the cable car. It's very strenuous, especially if you do it in the summer. And it takes hours.

But there's a much older trail that people had been using for ages, and you can hike from Po Lin Monastery down to the main road in Tung Chung in about 45 minutes. More going up.

Just did this last week (in the opposite direction) actually. It's called the Ngong Ping Rescue Trail and takes about 2-3 hours to complete.

The way up was incredibly tough (many many steep stairs). I'm not sure if it's any easier on the way down but bring lots of water.

Can you see as much from the trail as from the cable car?

Looked like the trail was in a valley whereas the cable car looked out over the mountain at the airport runway, for example.

Didn't see anyone on the trail during my cable car ride but could see the appeal to hikers.

The start and end of the trail diverge from the cable car path but I'd say for at least half the trail you're walking directly under the cable cars. In certain spots you're close enough to wave at the people going by in the cable cars. :)

When we hiked it, it was a Monday afternoon and we ran into maybe 10 or so people across the entire trail. It seems to get much busier on the weekends though - we took the cable car up on the previous Saturday and saw tons of people hiking it (which is what gave us the crazy idea to hike up ourselves!)
