Travel Technology - Creating a Google Voice number when outside the US

I have a friend who is in the Netherlands for the foreseeable future and wants to set up a Google Voice US number. It doesn't give him any available numbers, but when I look on my GV account there's plenty of availability.

So, there must be something in his account that is tripping Google to realizing he's out of the country.

His credit card is an American MasterCard issued by a US bank. His billing address is is his address in Chicago. Does anyone know how he can get a US GV number?

I have logged in as him from New York and still can't see any numbers available.

Your best bet is probably to set it up for him first, with no credits and then he can log in to change password, configure settings, buys credits, etc. My sons had problems in Asia so I did the initial set up for them.

At least in Taiwan and HK, google voice for them is sometimes iffy....I'll try it myself this coming trip.

I believe it can only be setup from the USA, so a workaround to register for Google Voice, is to use a proxy which can show an IP location of USA. Either that, or like already posted, you do the initial setup for him, and he can take it from there.

THanks guys, we got it working. I had to log in as him from New York, refund the credit he'd charged in euros, buy credit in dollars, and add his US mobile number to his profile.
