Sixt - Sixt - Damages Claim - Assistance?

Wondering if anyone can offer advice here:

I rented a car from Sixt in Europe during November, dropping in a different city the following day.

I was a Gold member (now Platinum), and the car I booked was not available, so was offered either a downgrade, or an up/side grade to a convertible sports car (which I took).

I was asked if I wanted additional insurance to remove the excess which I declined. I was not given a contract to review, nor did I sign anything.

Unfortunately I was involved in an accident the following day as I was about to return the vehicle, damaging the front and rear wing of the vehicle.

I logged the relevant reports as requested and asked how much the excess was, only to be told that the vehicle only had third party insurance.

Now almost a month later I receive a claim for almost EUR 16k, only around 25% less than the current value of the vehicle according to a UK database.

Understandably I am rather concerned, I do not have the ability to pay this claim, and question both the validity and the amount of the claim. With hindsight I should have insisted on recieving a contract and reviewing it, but as I was rather late and a gold customer I didn't think it necessary at the time.

Anyone had experience of appealing against such issues?

I'll check the case with my colleagues.
