I hear that the security on departure at JNB are extremely strict with regard to handbagage, so I guess I would like to stay airside between arriving on LH and departing on an international flight on SA - is that possible at JNB?
My reason for worrying is that I carry a bag that fits the max dimensions and a small camerabag in Y - I have had no problem travelling with both on LH, SK, UA, CO so I hope the SA will be ok aswell.
Second question: If I stay Airside are there anywhere where one wouldd not get hazzled whilst taking photographs of planes?

I've done I->I transfers at JNB and I had no problems. Just follow the signs and you'll get thru a normal screening like any normal airport. On the other hand, I don't find JNB any worse than any other airport in the world when it comes to carry-on screening.
Normally I don't haul my photo gear around that much these days, but I've done it twice when passing thru JNB and it wasn't a problem at all.

Security at JNB is not really the place you'll get hassled about baggage - the check in counters are where you'll likely encounter hassle, if there's even hassle to be had. Don't know where you heard JNB security is strict about anything, but you should stay away from such bad sources.
You can take pictures pretty much anywhere inside JNB and not be hassled.

I can speak to your first question.
Did this in September, LH to SA, FRA-JNB-LVI
As far as "airside" JNB is slightly odd - you still have to go through a passport check and will get a "transit" stamp, but you're still technically airside. I have a rather large rolling bag (22") that is sometimes problems, but SA gave me no hassle with it. YMMV of course.

Thanks guys (I guess) for the answers.
As for the info about strict security: from Flyertalk other threads and from the JNB homepage where it says something about security checking compliance of handbagage limitations.
But I just chance it on Sunday
