I was planning on getting a flight on 31st December in premium economy from LGW to Las Vegas but I was waiting on getting my student visa to book (just to make sure i'd have it in time) and i've just noticed that between yesterday and today the prices up until the 1st January have jumped up to 2500 return in premium economy instead of 1250. What caused the prices to jump? Are they going to come back down again? Thanks!

Fare rules. You're now within 21 days so only the more expensive flights are available. If you have any miles with VS look at a miles plus money fare or checkout what Virgin Holidays are offering.

Thanks for your response. Weirdly all miles plus money fares are apparently gone too, which I don't understand either as they were there a few days ago too...what I am a bit confused about then is that economy seems to still be the same price so that is 600 return and premium is 2500...seems like a pretty huge jump in prices.

The price for economy and premium economy are not directly linked by some formlae that says (eg) PE = Econ * 3 etc

Prices are determiend by demand for a limited capacity - so greater demand means the prices go up.

Also as the cheaper fare buckets in each cabin get used up the prices increase. Factor in advance date time limits (tied to the cheap buckets) and once those dates pass the cheaper tickets get locked out too.

Miles plus money fares are limited in availabilty and will either get sold or if it looks like they can sell the seats for cash any remaining will get pulled.

LOL yes.

but also check what the fares are like for travelling on the 30th Dec or 1st January 2010 too (if that fits your plans of course) - they might be cheaper even allowing for the cost of a hotel for a night !

The BA sale is due to start on the 22nd December, so if you're brave you may want to wait until then, as it's highly likely the Virgin will mirror their fares.

The 1st Jan was cheaper but has now jumped up too, I guess they're reaching the 3 week barrier that was mentioned and doubling (30th is also expensive).

Hmm...i'd consider waiting til 22nd Dec if fares for only a week away will go in to the sale? I really want to travel on the 31st Dec. Are economy tickets likely to jump up suddenly the way premium did? Otherwise I can just monitor them and if they start going up buy but if they might suddenly double, that worries me a bit! Also, not sure if this will affect my ability to buy any sale tickets but i'm not planning on flying back til the end of May. Thanks!

book in EC and upgrade at the airport for normally £179 pp each way.
