JAL Mileage Bank - Paid Sakura Access: NRT

So I just checked in for my flight to SYD at NRT and paid for my Y -> PY upgrade and they offered Sakura access for ¥5k, they don't advertise this on the website like the paid upgrades, so I'm curious if this is common practice?

ANA offers paid lounge access for the same fee. In line with the cost of a one day pass for US airlines too.

I could think of so many better ways of spending JPY 5k than the Sakura lounge, even in the wastelands that is NRT airside.

Unless there's some desperate urgency to sit down and get down to serious work, it would work out cheaper to have a proper dinner and a few beers, then even a shower in the paid showers.

I seem to recall that airside prices were through the roof. I can easily drink JPY 5k of beer in the lounge. :p

Last year on a Continental award ticket, I don't think I actually had a drink but did go look at the prices. :p

It wasn't offered at the check in counters, it was offered at the ticketing booth when we were paying the upgrade - not sure if this is important or impacts the amount of times its offered.

And as for the value for money, yeah 5k is steep but we had 5+hrs to kill and we made light work of a bottle of Hibiki 17yo whiskey and a few serves of that curry they have so I figure we got some value for our money :)

they don't have PY on that route. this is probably only offered to those who upgraded to PY at check-in. Because those people won't get lounge access if their original booking doesn't have that. They probably just try to upsell to these targeted people on slow days.
