Just saw this on the Hertz website. After tax, rate is about $24 (for rentals originating in Manhattan). Valid from EWR on Thursday and Friday; valid to EWR on Saturday, Sunday, or Monday. Use rate code "MOVEIT". Offer expires end of December, 2012.

This is typical - they need people to move cars from the city to the airport.

And, apparently, from the airport to the city too. :)

But this rate is lower than the old ICAP rate that Hertz used to offer, and the rate is good for a variety of car sizes.

Offering the low one-way rate from Manhattan with a Saturday pickup is also new.

Considering the traffic during gridlock alert days in December + new toll structure - they should give renters money for helping them with transport service.

Depending on the time of day - Lincoln or Holland Tunnel outbound traffic delays can be easily 15 to 30 minutes, and as much as 60+ minutes, especially when the express bus only lanes are in use. The total costs with taxes & fees is a great deal, however.

Coming from EWR into Manhattan, add $12 for cash tolls (all hours, no discount for off-peak, unlike EZ-Pass holders) and the cash only lanes can add extra, extra travel time at the congested in-bound Lincoln or Holland Tunnel. With EZ-Pass, We can usually ease up to the toll plaza in 10 or 20 minutes depending on the approach, but cash lanes are often backed up & move extra slow, figure on adding 30 to 45 minutes as a rule of thumb, maybe more at peak travel time. It is still, a nice tradeoff for using a car service as long as one isn't on a tight schedule.

In addition to the inbound tolls, there are also higher taxes/fees for rental cars picked up in NJ. But for a Manhattan resident who wants to take a day trip to, say, Albany or Philly, and can get back to Manhattan from EWR by public transportation, the Manhattan to EWR rate can be a great deal.

I recently used a similar (slightly more expensive) Hertz deal from LGA to Manhattan, and did a roundtrip to Syracuse in the 24 hours allotted.

Wow! You're absolutely right. I've modified the OP, and will ask a moderator to revise the thread title.

Good catch!

I would do this to give my son a chance to ride in a car...IF they covered insurance, which I doubt it does. If it covered tunnel costs, even better.

There's no tunnel toll going into NJ. Minimum third-party liability is included; LDW is not, but if you charge the rental to a credit card with free car-rental, then you'd be covered for loss/damage too (assuming that you do not have a personal auto insurance policy).

I was even able to apply a Hertz $10-off-a-weekend-day coupon when I booked this rental last month; paid $12, tax included. (I'm not sure if Hertz is still allowing this coupon to be used on this rate, however.)

They're still doing it. RQ - MOVEIT and I've been booking well into January 2013. Thurs/Fri EWR-NYC and Sat/Sun/Mon NYC-EWR. I use it now for 24-hour trips and take AirTrain/NJ Transit from EWR-NYC for $12.50. Beats the regular $68 base rate.

Unlimited Miles too, and counts toward status rentals.

There's a location on 34th between 8th and 9th: 2 blocks from Penn Station (and my apt) so you can easily get to EWR via NJ Transit or JFK via LIRR. I will warn it closes 3:00pm on Saturday.

Glad to hear that the offer is ongoing!

I've rented once or twice from West 34th Street, but when I'm going to drive to Central or Southern NJ before returning to EWR, I usually rent from Hertz' Morton Street location in Greenwich Village. It's close to both the Holland Tunnel, and the big West 4th Street subway station.

To get back to Manhattan after dropping the car at EWR, you can save a few bucks by taking the #62 bus from any terminal to Newark Penn Station, and then PATH or NJ Transit to Manhattan. Depending on time of day, this might or might not take longer than taking NJ Transit from EWR Rail Station.

Travelling with kids changes the equation quite a bit then.

Terms changed - EWR and LGA to Manhattan: pick up between Thursday 1:00pm and Friday noon; Manhattan to EWR/LGA/JFK is now valid from Sunday *2:00pm* to Monday noon.

This is a ridiculous part of their terms since they don't allow earning of miles anyway (I don't know about Hertz points): "A Frequent Flyer Recovery tax may be imposed on certain rentals earning miles or points"

As a Gold member, I've always earned 1,100 VS miles with the MOVEIT rate -- with no frequent-flyer tax recovery surcharge.
