I have been looking around the Choice web site and found lots of properties in Japan. Redeeming for one night is 8,000 points for all of them that I have seen so far. This means the Choice Barclays Visa card would give you 5 nights in Japan. This seems really good value, especially with the exchange rate. The average rate of a Choice hotel in Tokyo is about 8,000 yen after tax, which is just over US$100. Since everyday purchase get you 2 points per dollar, you can easily get >2 cents per dollar spent, which makes it not bad for everyday purchase.

I guess as long as you are not looking for a high-end hotel and don't mind the short reservation time frame, this is a pretty good deal. Has it always been 8,000 points? And are the quality comparable to the ones in the US? Thanks!

Stayed in a number of them. Pretty standard japanese "business hotel". Rooms are fairly small, internet is free, breakfast is free ($10 value).

They won't check you in early under ANY circumstances unless you pay (sometimes they want the whole day price for checking you in a couple of hours before their check-in deadline). They won't make a fuss if you come between 2 and 3 pm, but early will always be a problem.

The same applies to check out. There is NO late check out. You must be out by 10 or 11am.

And they don't care about your ChoiceHotels status whatsoever.
