New York City - Any hotel in Manhattan with good gym?

Hi there.
We're headed to Manhattan sometime in the next several weeks, and I'm looking for any hotel with a fitness center or gym with free weights (or a gym pass to something nearby).

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

I can't give specifics because I don't know for sure, but I am pretty positive that some hotels have relationships with local gyms (Equinox, NY Health & Racquet, NY Sports Clubs, Manhattan Athletic Club) where you can get free or heavily discounted daily access during your stay.

Depends on what you mean by "good gym."

Equinox is probably the biggest high-end gym chain in the city and there are a number of hotels that will give you daily access. A quick Google suggests that the Sanctuary Hotel in Times Square (which I've never heard of) offers Equinox access, and the Morgans Hotel Group (Hudson, Royalton and other hotels) has some sort of partnership with Equinox, although you should check on the details with the individual hotel.

If you just need a gym that has a full range of free weights and don't care about how fancy it is, then there are many other options. The Crowne Plaza in Times Square, for example, has a New York Sports Club in the hotel that I assume guests have access to.

I would probably make the same assumption, but the OP should check with any hotel AND the gym to make sure everyone's in synch before commiting to a specific property. It is NYC, after all, so assuming free access may be erroneous.

See this thread for a few ideas:

Le Parker Meridien has an excellent gym:

Great responses from my fellow forum members to which I'll simply add that once you find the gym, you should double check the free weights issue.

OP, how long is your stay and how many people will be using the gym?

It's not terribly difficult to come across guest passes for various NYC gyms.

Thanks everybody for your quick replies.

I'll be in town for around 4-5 days.

I'm looking for anything with a bench press and a squat rack. The problem with most of the "gyms" I've encountered at hotels has been the lack of free weights - most only have a few treadmills and machines.

My experience has been that gyms passes have been difficult to come by unless one has some sort of local address and is willing to listen to the quick sales pitch during the first visit.

(I'ld rather just cough up the bucks and hit the weights, if I can't get a pass through the hotel I'll be staying at)

Don't forget FT has a whole (relatively) new forum on travellers health & fitness, appropriately named Travel Health and Fitness, that might have more information on the topic. :)

Here's another link to the Parker Meridien's gym Gravity with pictures:

The Loew's Regency has benches and a Smith Machine:

Otherwise consider just going to:
http://www.edgegyms.com/
http://www.equinox.com/
or one of the other chain gyms as noted above.

2nd vote for the Parker Meridien gym - great gym & pool.

I suggest getting passes to the Reebok Sports Club for a very nice gym workout experience over 4 days. If you email them, they will arrange for passes. Because they're high-end, there's a sales pitch, but minus high pressure tactics.

Beautiful gym & service: Peninsula New York - email them, they typically give out complementary 3-day passes, no high sales pressure.

A lot of members don't live in NYC, but travel often and no need to have a local address to get access.

I could be wrong but I think the Crown Plz Times Sq has a NYSC within the building. Not sure if access given to hotel guest but worth giving them a call.

I know that this is probably not of much interest, but the Sanctuary Hotel used to be the Portland Square Hotel (W. 47th)
