Hilton HHonors - Newbie question/contacting hotel for award stay

Hi. As I am getting conflicting information from the Diamond Desk on a potential award stay, I would like to contact the hotel directly regarding my request. Should I just go through the regular hotel reservation system, ask to speak to a supervisor in reservations, or ask to speak to someone connected with HHonors? Has anybody had more success with one way than another way?

I know you're looking for availabilility, but often contacting the hotel is good for securing upgrades in advance (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum57/HTML/006583.html) as well. It is also cool to note you can check your upgrade status online (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum57/HTML/006899.html).
