Introducing Tier Qualifying Points
Beginning in January, all points that count toward tier status will be referred to as Tier Qualifying Points (TQPs). This enhancement to the program will enable us to offer more opportunities for members to earn points that will count toward tier status. The website will be updated in January to reflect the change.
More opportunities to earn tier status--looks like they're positioning themselves to run promos similar to those the airlines offer: credit-card TQPs, double TQPs on certain routes at certain times, buy TQPs, you name it. Certainly would make it easier for non-corridor passengers to earn status. And since elite status is the greatest brand loyalty/advertising mechanism ever invented by the travel industry, I don't fault Amtrak for wanting more elites.
I wonder if any other restructuring of elite benefits is in the works, such as a third elite level or additional upgrade and companion certs for every 5000 TQPs past the highest tier.
