Hi,

Off to the museums at Sinsheim and Speyer next year and likely staying in Heidelberg for a few days, potentially near the station.

Can anyone recommend any good places to eat? Ideally something authentic/with character, not a generic chain, and not outrageously expensive?

Thanks in advance.

We went to Schnitzelbank which is right off the Hauptstrasse (main pedestrian street in old town). I thought it was very good. They have a sister restaurant (Schnookeloch) which is down the side street in front of the old church at the end of Hauptestrasse (going toward the river). Schnookeloch is considered a "student bar" and it's a great place to hang out and drink beer. The food is identical.

Another place we ate at was Essighaus on Plock (runs parallel to Haupstrasse). I thought the food just as good as Schnitzelbank but it was definitely less pricey.

I second that ...

Although I live only a 15 mins drive from Heidelberg I´m not too excited about eating in HD restaurants since my dining experiences in HD are not really good ...
I´d rather go for Mannheim - but that´s a personal thing ;)

If you're vegetarian, there's a place called "Red" that is east of the Old Town (but still within easy walking distance). Large, diverse buffet - VERY reasonable prices, casual atmosphere, good desserts.

You should also consider the "Seppl" which is a few meters away from the market square / city hall on Hauptstrasse as well as the "Kulturbrauerei" (a microbrewery).

Both belong to the same owner: http://www.heidelberger-kulturbrauerei.de/

There's a restaurant on the Hauptstraße that is very much in the usual the touristic itinerary, but you can't get it wrong there. Their food is really good, whatever you order:

When I lived in Heidelberg a couple of years ago we went to "Auerstein" (Dossenheimer Landstr. 82) from time to time, back then it was very good.

"Schwarz" at the central station has Michelin star und a nice view overlooking the city. The food is good, but it's very expensive.

Hard Rock Cafe, Eiscafe Roma, and Mensa Zeughaus is one of the best cafes of Heidelberg. Located in the middle of the old town, it is easily reachable for the average tourist - and it's really worth it!
