Can't say for certain, but I assume this is being blown out of proportion.

Sounds a bit like rubbish, or at least badly mangled.

Note -- "as both planes began approaching each other on the runway, preparing to gather speed and get ready to take off."

The runway would only be operating in one direction, so hardly likely this could happen as implied.
