Etihad Airways Etihad Guest - import tax on miles shopping rewards

Hi

I'm on the verge of exchanging my miles at Etihad's reward shop. My concerns are additional costs.

Usually when I mail order from abroad there's 30% import duties at customs relating to the price of the product.

Is this different for items exchanged from miles? Do the receipts/packages state the price in a monetary currency or does it only state the amount in miles?

anyone know from experience? or how to go about this?

cheers,
xav

Some monetary amount has to appear on the import docket, but it might be less for mile redeem items.

What country are you in?

thanks, I'm down in the Balkans. Its pretty strict at customs- I've had to pay taxes for gifts before. I'd enquire at the post office if i spoke the language.

So if someone could tell me from experience whats actually printed on the import docket, that would be great; The amount in miles/ or the actual (somewhat exaggerated) price?

cheers

From the lack of response I'm guessing most folks on here redeem award tickets / upgrades rather than use the shop? I for one have never bought anything off the shop - I don't find it to be great value (unless one has a smaller amount of miles one needs to cash in before they expire, of course).

Thats exactly my situation. I'm no frequent flyer and my few miles are about to expire. Indeed the value isnt too great going for items. Basically I'm forcing myself to purchase something fancy i don't really need priced 30% more than local. Plus i have to pay 30% tax on that. yep do the maths. its a bummer.
cheers
