I realize that using free nights I dont get any points but do they count towards the number of nights you need for the next status 10 for gold 20 for platinum etc. ?

Yes, they count toward elite status in the Choice Privileges program.
Choice Hotels does count award stays as good toward elite status.
Hilton and Starwood are the two other big hotel brands whose own programs also counts award stays as good toward elite status.
