Whenever I have looked for Hiltons (or other hotels in Europe), I have been thwarted by the twin bed syndrome. My wife and I have two small kids and when we travel we usually do the one room/two bed routine. In the States, that usually means two double beds. Mom and Dad sleep in one bed and the two kids sleep together in the other bed. It seems to work fine and we all have a good time.

Whenever we have looked for award travel in Europe with Hilton, we seem to run into the two twin beds options with a maximum room occupancy of three people.

What do Europeans do when they travel as a family and want to stay in a city center hotel. Do they just suck it up and get another room? Any strategies or advice would be appreciated.

They do a family room, with two twin beds and a double bed. Sometimes it's twin beds and a pull out sofa. The kids usually have to be 15 years old or less.

They usually call it a family room, so if you ask they will probably know of which you speak.

From my research for our trip last summer, family rooms are not as common at Hilton properties in the U.K. as at other chains FWIW. Don't know if this pattern continues in other parts of Europe, but I'd be interested in others' experiences.
