Hi All,

I read alot about some sort of agreements between Westjet and other airlines. But when checking on their site to book flights to Asia or Britain, nothing shows up. I'm not understanding this codesharing and interline stuff.

In particular I've got some westjet dollars and soon I'll have a free international companion ticket that I'm hoping to use for a trip to Asia.

Westjet does not fly to either Asia or Europe. Westjet does fly international (US, Mexico, Caribbean), but not intercontinental.

AFAIK Westjet does not place its code on other carriers' flights to Asia/Europe.

What Westjet does now have is interline agreements. If you want to fly to Asia/Europe, you can fly Westjet domestically/transborder and connect to certain international airlines (which will fly you over the Atlantic/Pacific oceans) on a single ticket. This will need to be booked via a travel agent or online source such as Expedia as to my knowledge the Westjet website only offers tickets to destinations served by its own operated/marketed flights.

Bottom line, I don't think there is any way that you'll be able to use your international companion ticket for Asia or Europe.

Besides a travel agent or Expedia, you can book intercontinental flights with WestJet flying the first segment on American Airlines, Cathay Pacific and KLM websites.

Thanks for the clarification.

So how would I go about selecting Westjet as the first segment on those other sites? Just keep drilling down all the flight options?

If you are starting your journey in the GTA, you can already fly nonstop from Toronto(YYZ)

to:

Hong Kong with Cathay Pacific/Air Canada
Beijing with Hainan Airlines/Air Canada
Shanghai with Air Canada

There is no need to start the journey with West Jet. Even if your destination in China is not one of those cities, you would first fly via HKG/PEK/PVG to connect to a secondary city. If you are flying Toronto - China (Other than Beijing or shanghai) I recommend flying Cathay Pacific via Hong Kong as they offer multiple onward Chinese destinations. They also offer best service/comfort!

Westjet is only required if you are flying between China and Canada (except Vancouver and Toronto) as west Jet can connect you via YYZ/YVR to other Canadian cities.
