Looks like I will dropping to Plat starting March 2012 (status ends in 2/29/2012). I understands that I can still use the Suite upgrade Cert(4/year as diamond) as long as I applied them before their expiration.

1) If I book a stay in Feb 2012 for April/May 2012 and applied a suite cert and it is confirmed, will they honor it when times come in April/May 2012 and I am only a Plat?

2) If I am still confirm to a suite, do I get Grand/Regency Club entry and breakfast that I will be only Plat at that time?

Thanks in advance.

1.) As long as you apply the suite upgrades by 2/29/2012, you can use them for future stays (they will be honored, regardless of your new 'lower' status level).

2.) You will not be allowed Regency Club entry; as you will be Platinum.

Unless if it's a Regency Suite which would allow regency club entry on its own. This varies by hotel.

Exactly, some properties give you RC/GC access by virtue of occupancy in the suite ans some don't.

Good clarification about the Regency suite; I guess I assumed that would be obvious by the room description (which I shouldn't have).

While there are exceptions (to almost everything) by each property; I think its fair to say the OP shouldnt count on RC/GC access once moving to Platinum.

One other point I'd note in case its helpful (along the lines of not assuming anything); is that once the suite upgrade is booked/applied, it cannot be materially changed (dates, number of nights) after you lose Diamond/become Platinum. However, you can change the underlying rate that the reservation is booked under. (say, from Hyatt Daily rate to AAA rate, etc).

Enjoy the suite updgrades!

Re club access it depends on the hotel's policy. If suite guests always get club access (as is the case with many Asian properties), then the OP will have access. If this is not the case, then the OP will not have access IF the property even realizes that he is no longer Diamond.

In my experience the dates can be changed, and the stay can be shortened or lengthened (up to 7 nights max for suite upgrade). Once applied, the only way the suite upgrade will be lost is if the reservation is cancelled.

Are diamond suite upgrades normally applied at the time of booking?

Confirmable from time of booking, but can be applied at any time from then to checkin

I assume this is a YMMV type of thing? Or stated policy somewhere? I too am almost certainly going to lose Diamond come March 2012, and will be using 3 of my remaining Diamond Suite upgrades for my Asia trip in in August 2012 when I'm only a Platinum... but I may want to change from 1 hotel to another (Regency to GH) in both Hong Kong and Tokyo... but only if I can get the Suite Upgrade transferred...

If the hotels are in Tokyo and Hong Kong, you will have club access simply because you'll be in a suite. Club access is included for all suite guests, regardless of status.

Once suite upgrades are `extended` i.e. applied to a reservation in the next year, in my experience they will be forfeited if the reservation is cancelled. Therefore you will have to decide which hotels you want to stay at before your upgrades expire, and stick with those hotels.

Unless budget is a factor, IMO it is a no brainer to choose the GH properties over HR in both Hong Kong and Tokyo.

Odd as I had traded emails about this subject with GP and they told me I had to check in by the "cut off" date which is 2.29.12 to use suite upgrades. I am liking that I may be able to use them afterwards. I will have to call diamond desk to figure this out

This could be a new rule this year, although I hope not. I can't say it would surprise me as IMO the Gold Passport program is no longer what it used to be, and Gold Passport customer service quality has gone downhill.

In the past the upgrades could be applied to a future reservation by 2/29, but the actual stay could be months later than that. I can't comment about this year.

It might be good to call back a few times and speak with different agents.

I tend to think that this agent was not well informed. Initially, when the upgrades came out in 2009, they weren't applicable to reservations beyond the expiration date of 2/28/10. However, there were lots of complaints about Diamonds who can't apply upgrades to reservations in March at all since new set weren't in the accounts by the stay or for later stays that simply book up even though the upgrades were available when the stay was booked.

I would be very surprised if they went back to the old rules on this.

I personally have a stay in May booked and confirmed with the suite upgrade (although this was booked last May).

Call back or PM the Gold Passport Concierge here on Flyertalk.

I hope you are right. Now just have to decide by 2/29 what future dates I will be needing a Hyatt and where. Hate, hate, hate the idea of losing those suite upgrades AND my diamond status as well. May as well make some use out of those upgrades! (suggestions are definitely welcome).

Hmm - time for a "where can we still bum RC entry after we've dropped status with regency suite upgrades" thread?

Some of us may not have had such great experiences with Hyatt, and have decided not to go to extremes to maintain status. But that doesn't mean that suite upgrades that were earned but unable to be used should be lost.

And I'm not necessarily counting on lounge entry, just a decent room. If you're Diamond then you really should think of it as one less person competing for your future upgrades or a place RC.

It looks like the suite u/g certs expire the same day status expires. I have four u/g in my account that expire Feb 2012. I did a diamond challenge but did not qualify so my current status is Platinum. Since I closed my VISA account that my drop as well. Any thoughts as whether I will be able to book the suite upgrades? The T&C's say only on paid stays, is that true in practice?

You should be able to book the suite upgrades up until they expire (stays can be after).

Yes, they are valid only on eligible rate revenue stays (booked through Hyatt - including AAA, Senior, Corporate discount rates - other special rates and booked through a third party are YMMV).

There was no good Hyatt promotion for a long time. If there is the same situation next year, I won't stay any single night with Hyatt.

Is there a soft landing from Diamond to Platinum or will I fall immediately to zero?

You'll soft land to Platinum. It's not much better than gold, but at least it provides free internet.

Ohhhh. Internet is the only real benefit? Hmmm... What should I say. Sad story. Will let my four suite upgrades expire. The ones from this year and the ones from next year. Well, maybe I will use the 2012 vouchers for 2013 holidays. Will also need to find a solution for my 120'000 points.

Regardless of your status, 120k still can be quite valuable. That is 5+ nights at Hyatt's best properties, or nearly four free nights in a suite (you could buy the extra points you needed)

If you don't have any use for this, they can be transfered to miles on many airlines- however you'll find them much more valuable for free stays at expensive Hyatt properties.
