DiningBuzz! - Bars and Restaurants in Skyscrapers

Some of my favorite memories of different places I've been has been having a drink with a friend at the highest bar or restaurant in the city. In Shanghai, that was Cloud 9. In Dubai it was Neos at The Address. In Stockholm, Restaurang Himlen fits the bill. I only recently started doing this, so I wanted to ask the FT Dining Collective: What are the highest bars or restaurants that you know of in each city? I'm looking for places that are perched above a city with great views, preferably as high up as you can get.

Legend:
[T] Communication/Observation Tower, not a Skyscraper
[V] Because of special view (river front, perched on mountain/hill, etc)
[M] Membership required; Members only.
[R] Revolving Restaurant/Bar
[FT] Contributed by FT members
[FT*] Recommended by FT members
[FTX] NOT Recommended by FT members
From an Internet Source. Not mentioned by FT members. May not be vetted.
[I]Feet to floors is calculated at a generic 11 feet per floor.

Example:
[In, T, R, ~150m]: This entry came from an internet source and is a revolving restaurant/bar 150 meters up in a communication/observation tower.
[V, M, FT*]: This entry is recommended by a FT member, but is members only and may be in a low rise with a specific view, such as over a river or of a specific landmark.

Singapore's new Altitude Bar is an amazing rooftop bar. The other amazing rooftop bar is at SwissHotel. IIRC, it's 80 floors to the top. On some nights, they migrate the entire bar to the Helipad.

Kuala Lumpur's (Malaysia) Trader Hotel Sky Bar is breathtaking. It has a perfect view of the world-famous Petronas Towers. I can't remember how many floors up it is, but it's quite a few.

Portland (Oregon) has a terrific view from Portland City Grill. I think it's 30 floors up and overlooks the river and the mountain.

I'll keep thinking about other ones I've been to. Fun idea!

Canoe in Toronto (54th floor) is good, really good service, nice food, great wine selection.

360 (revolving restaurant at the top of the CN Tower) not great IMO - although it is a few years since I went and have been told it has improved.

I was at 360 by request of out of town relatives last month, it is not in the same league as Canoe.
However the rotating view is better.

The BonaVista at the Bonaventure in L.A. is a great memory for me! Was there back in 1981, late at night. Had some sort of rum punch and the glass was mine to keep. A large ceramic "Tweety Bird". All these years later I still have it. Was good to plant an aloe in....

Nice to remember 30 years ago when I was a young, cute travelling nurse. Good memories......:)

Shanghai: Bar and restaurant at the Park Hyatt

Dined at the back then East Berlin TV Tower in May 1989. Menu was a mix of German and Soviet Russian and the wines ditto East German Rieslings and Soviet sparkling wine. Must have changed a bit? ;)

At the Park Hyatt, AFAIK, only hotel guests are let in the bar on weekends if no dinner reservation at the restaurant. And there is a minimum spend of around 150RMB on weekdays for non-guests.

But still a good place for a drink or two and selected nibbles. However, I wouldn't venture into the restaurant for taste, more to impress Chinese customers.

Great thread! I am a big fan of "sky bars" and tend to look for them wherever I go.

Aqua and Felix in Hong Kong are also worth visiting. (my preference goes to Aqua).

And as others have already mentioned the Banyan Tree in Bangkok as well as Swissotel (the Stamford) in Singapore are great for drinks with a view.

WP 24 in downtown Los Angeles has a gorgeous bar and seriously overpriced good food. This is a Wolfgang Puck restaurant and is on the 24th floor of the Ritz Carlton. Go for drinks and appetizers. View is spectacular.

Aqua and Felix in Hong Kong are also worth visiting. (my preference goes to Aqua).

And as others have already mentioned the Banyan Tree in Bangkok as well as Swissotel (the Stamford) in Singapore are great for drinks with a view.

The men's restroom at Felix is also quite unique! I enjoyed the food too - maybe not the most memorable, but still pretty good.

Here's where I've been in New York City:

The View - 43rd floor, Marriott Marquis Hotel
Asiate - 36th floor, Mandarin Oriental Hotel

They don't quite meet the 50th floor and higher requirement, but it appears that the restaurant/bar at Top of the Rock, 70th floor, Rockefeller Center, has closed. I'd rather go to Asiate anyways.

Added these too! Keep 'em coming. I'd love to hear any suggestions for here in Seattle. I know Canlis is often mentioned as a restaurant with a great view, but I'm curious what other restaurants people have tried that fit in the tower/view category here.

I'll trade recommendations from the eyes of a local for them. :)

Yeah, they are! Always a good laugh at being able to "pee onto the city" as well as the semi view into the ladies room.

For clarification for those who don't get it or haven't been, there is a lot of glass, including the urinals being placed below windows overlooking the city.

I'm very much a fan of the Signature Room at the John Hancock Center in Chicago for drinks and the Top of the Hub at the Prudential Center in Boston for drinks/appetizers. I don't know if I'd ever go to one of these restaurants for a full dinner as they always seem rather pricy and the quality of food not worth the $$ tag but for drinks they're always fun.

Lunch buffet is only $20. :D

Is the lunch buffet decent? My GF and I will be in Chicago over Christmas, and neither of us drink, so a decent lunch is better than a bar/lounge for us. The 20$ price tag seems almost too cheap.

I've never had it but I imagine it to be excellent. But one of us needs to try it to find out and I won't be in Chicago for a while. :D

They also have a full lunch menu available (sandwiches, salads, etc.) all very reasonable. Reading a few reviews online, they range from "ok" to "good"... so at that price point, I think it's acceptable for the view.

I suspect there aren't many people who want to trek up there during a weekday lunch. It's not really a business district and there's some time involved with getting up the elevator.

Another option would be to have appetizers in the bar area. They're all overpriced but decent. You could call an audible when you step off the elevator.

Pretty surprising that no one has mentioned Tokyo yet. Pretty much every skyscraper in Tokyo has restaurants on the top floor or floors. There are probably 15 skyscrapers with restaurants on top just in West Shinjuku. One of them (I forget which) even has a transvestite show bar up top.

I added the "Lost in Translation" bar, but I'd love to know where the rest are.

Nearest to the Park Hyatt, where the bar you refer to is (if it actually existed, they actually "moved" it around a bit for the movie) is the Shinkjuku NS building. Leaving the Park Hyatt, walk down to the street, turn right and go straight. Just past the Shinjuku Washington Hotel, cross the street into the NS building. There are lifts to the top floor restaurant section. In the interior of the building is also the world's largest clock.

If you cross the street at the intersection right in front of the Shinjuku Washington hotel and walk straight past the Tokyo Metropolitan Government building (which has snack bars on the top floors of the two towers), you will see a number of other high rises to your right. Most of those have restaurant floors at the top as well, you can tell which ones because they have signs outside showing the restaurants.

Easy!

There are high rises that are not quite as high throughout Tokyo with restaurants on top. Virtually all department stores, for example, have restaurant floors at the top, including all the department stores in and around Shinjuku station.

Dubai also has The Observatory, on the 52nd floor of the Marriott Harbour, and Bar 44 (quite possibly the best bar in town) and Embassy on the top floors of Grosvenor House towers 1 & 2 respectively.

Haven't been yet but I understand that the new Jumeirah Etihad Towers Hotel in Abu Dhabi has a restaurant and bar on the 62nd/63rd floors - these should have a great view of the Emirates Palace and the Corniche.

Just got back from Las Vegas, and added some more options to the list. :) A couple of notes:

Lounge 107 (http://www.stratospherehotel.com/Hotel/Dining/Level-107-Lounge): It is free to go up to the bar with a two drink minimum, and during happy hour there are 2 for 1 martinis and half-price appetizers. Afterwards, you can walk up to the observation deck where the rides are for free (which would normally cost you $16 just to get up there).

Tea Lounge (http://www.mandarinoriental.com/lasvegas/dining/tea_lounge/), Mandarin Orient: Very nice and reasonably priced afternoon tea. The view here is very nice and looks northward towards the strip. Three tables are directly against the window, so it is a good idea to book early and ask for one of those.

Effiel Tower Restaurant (http://www.eiffeltowerrestaurant.com/): This information about table 56 was from the concierge.

One addition in Stockholm, and a brief review of the Portland City Grill. I checked it out over the weekend while I was down there. Seems like a pretty decent place, but it's extremely popular for the late night happy hour. I'd advise hitting it for lunch (which is in the $10-15/plate range) or getting there early for the happy hour. The HH drinks were pretty weak, but the regular ordered drinks were much better.

19 Kitchen & Bar (http://www.harveystahoe.com/casinos/harveys-lake-tahoe/restaurants-dining/19-kitchen-bar-detail.html) at Harvey's in South Lake Tahoe (Stateline, NV) is located on the 19th floor of their hotel and provides absolutely spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and lake. I also went and checked out RView in Seattle. The views are nice and it's probably the best bag for your buck in Seattle for a skybar in the afternoon. Even though it is only on the 29th floor, it still feels in the city and is high enough to look down over the city. On a clear day both Mt. Baker and the Olympics are visible from the bar. Prices for happy hour (4pm to 6pm) were good, but I don't think I would pay full price for it. It is open 4pm to 11pm.

Tashkent: Tashkent Tower (Space Restaurant)--great views of the city and turns every hour. Food wasn't too memorable.

Beijing:
Atmosphere in the China World Summit Wing
The China Grille in the Park Hyatt
The rooftop of the Emperor Hotel, it's only ~5 floors above the ground (which is a good thing because there are no elevators), but the view is the best by far of these three

HK:
This is somewhat hard to judge because almost every 5-star hotel in HK has a bar on a high floor with stunning views. But, the LKF hotel, the Penn, and the Sheraton are my top 3, in spite of the fact that a very unpleasant food poisoning episode at the latter caused me to end my love affair with raw oysters.

I'll add my vote for Top of the Hub in Boston, too. ^ It's a pretty darn good way to spend a meal; plus, on most clear days, you can see the planes take-off/land at BOS. :p

I think the best value is to go for lunch as they have a prix fixe lunch menu. Currently, it's $22 for 3 courses: choice of starter (usually soup du jour or salad/appetizer), main course (usually 3 options: meat, seafood, vegetarian), and choice of dessert. For the Back Bay are, $22 really isn't that bad for a 3-course lunch. Just remember that in order to get a seat in the dining room, there is a dress code, but not to worry - if you're in jeans/shorts, you can still eat in the lounge/bar tables.

The Mado Lounge at the top of Mori Tower in Roppongi is pretty amazing-- great view of the city and Tokyo Tower!

And will also vouch for O-Zone at the top of the Ritz Carlton in HK, when it's not cloudy you get a great view of HK island.

I can vouch for Duck and Waffle, 40th floor of Heron Tower in London, http://duckandwaffle.com/, and have heard fantastic things about SushiSamba on 38 of Heron Tower - an officemate of mine has been three times in the last two weeks.

Happy to take questions on Duck & Waffle and/or give menu recs by PM.

Cafe Sydney (31 Alfred St. Sydney NSW 2000) is on the fifth floor of the historic Customs House and has stunning views of the Harbour and Circular Quay. It's not terribly high but I think the panorama from the terrace is worthy of a mention here.

Canoe in Toronto (54th floor) is good, really good service, nice food, great wine selection.

360 (revolving restaurant at the top of the CN Tower) not great IMO - although it is a few years since I went and have been told it has improved.

Doesn't Trump's new hotel/residences have a pretty nice restaurant that is high up with nice views?

Thanks for the report! There is also a Starbucks on the 40th floor skylobby that is the same price as all the other starbucks and has GREAT views. It's locally known among Starbucks employees as "Skybucks".

1) New York Grill in Tokyo - which I'm sure has already been mentioned. Was there in February. Dinner just okay, but great for a drinks and live jazz (now nightly).

2) 20 Up in Hamburg - Top floor of the Empire Riverside Hotel. Amazing panoramic views of the city. Hip crowd.

3) Tower Club at Lebua, Bangkok - which has also been probably mentioned already.

4) Tavola 36 in Osaka - Atop the Swisshotel Nankai. It's an Italian restaurant by night, but it's also used for complimentary breakfasts in the daytime. Not sure this qualifies as a 'skyscraper', though.

5) There's a cafe at the observation deck of one of Tokyo's Metropolitan Government Buildings. Forget which tower has it; maybe both do.

6) Columbia Tower in Seattle - I frequent the Starbucks on the 40th floor. It not only has excellent views, but the layout of the space is nicer than most other Starbucks.

Just got back from a trip to South America and adding some information on skybars there. I got shot down in all the cities except Rio:

1. Rio: Aprazivel was nice and the food was pretty good. There are lots of places where there is no view of the city at all. Ask to be seated on the veranda for best bets. View is partially occluded by trees. Expensive.

2. Foz do Iguazu: The skybar opens at 7:30pm and is not open for lunch. When we were there it was closed due to a roof leak.

3. Montevideo: The Radisson Blu sky bar may be changing owners and is not currently open, according to our concierge after they called the hotel.

4. Buenos Aires: The skybar at the Pulitzer Hotel is best I could find, but it is only open for the summer. It was not open when we tried to go.

For completeness, when I was recently in Asheville, North Carolina, I attempted to visit a rooftop restaurant/bar but could not find any still open. Most of the taller hotels have been converted to senior citizen housing developments.

Really a shame, as the views would have been excellent.

I see several las vegas places mentioned, but none of them are Mix at the top of THE Hotel at Mandalay Bay. It counts as both a restaurant (Alain Ducasse!!) and a bar/lounge/night club. Spectacular views the entire Las Vegas Strip.

+3 ^

Had dinner with msadey and junior (9 months old) this March. Food was fantastic (though I was a little disappointed with my steak - still very good but was expecting even better).

Staff were brilliant.

Views spectacular. If you do eat there, I recommend wandering around to the bar, perhaps for an aperitif....

Thanks for a very useful list! Here's my contribution:

- Moscow: Sky Lounge, Academy of Sciences building, 22nd floor - interesting architecture/decor and good food

- Kiev: Belvedere Restaurant, Crystall Hall building - 1st floor really, but being on the hill you get great river views

- Kiev: Bar on 8, Hyatt Regency Kiev, 8th floor

- Montreal: 737, Royal Bank Tower, 47th floor

- I would've also listed the rooftop pool & bar at Hotel de la Montagne in Montreal, but sadly it closed recently.

I've only been here for happy hour drinks, but I have heard good things about the food. If anything, it's probably the best place in Tahoe to watch the sunset.

Open for lunch and sometimes for dinner. It seems like they have an inconsistent schedule and the maitre d' recommended calling ahead to make sure that they were open. Lunch seems to be the best time. The menu looked pretty expensive, and drinks were in the $13 range (IIRC).

When in Melbourne, Vue de Monde (http://www.theage.com.au/entertainment/restaurants-and-bars/vue-de-monde-20111015-1lprd.html).

55th floor of the Rialto Building. The Rialto used to be the tallest building in Melbourne, but since the much taller Eureka Tower went up in 2006 nobody cares about the Rialto any more so they converted their old observation deck into a restaurant.

Consistently rated as one of Australia's best restaurants. $150 for a four-course meal, or $250 for the ten-course degustation. Haven't been there myself yet, but I'm actively looking for an excuse.

Come to think of it, there's a restaurant in the Eureka Tower too, it's called Eureka 89 and is on the 89th floor. Higher than Vue de Monde, but much less favourably reviewed (http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2009/04/20/1240079594161.html). Cheaper though. But if you want cheap food and a good view, pack a sandwich and head for the observation deck. :)
