Does anyone know how e-coupons work? According to Lifemiles

Activate your e-Coupons at least 72 hours prior to your flight through the nearest Avianca or TACA Information Center or by calling our Call Center.

The Spanish version has a link to also activate them through the e-coupons balance page, but there is nothing on that page to activate them.

We recommend you to choose the “automatic” e-Coupon feature in "Your Information and Preferences" through LifeMiles.com so you don’t have to activate your e-Coupons each time you travel.

Information and Preferences has no automatic e-coupon option, it has an option "Always apply to an upgrade" whatever that is supposed to mean, that is found oddly in the box with the redress number and emergency contacts. Is that it? I have that checked. Does that mean if I book a valid international economy ticket it will automatically apply for an upgrade with my coupons?

LifeMiles also says

When booking your ticket please provide your LifeMiles number and make sure you purchase any of the available fares in economy class, note that for domestic flights in Colombia and Peru Promo fare does not apply. For international flights there is no restriction on the fare.

Is reward travel an available fare in economy class and am I purchasing it with miles?

1. First go to lifemiles.com and introduce ur FF number and password.

2. Click on the section status or get to your ecoupons balance.

3. Once you are on your ecoupons balance this legend is written :"See how many e-Coupons you have left in your account and use them to upgrade your flight experience next time you travel. Remember: if you don’t have enough left, you can always purchase or redeem your miles for additional e-Coupons"

4. Do a click on the part that says: purchase or redeem your miles

5. Then you will see again your name and available coupons. and click on continue.

6. After that you gotta change from purchase to Redeem, you will be asked for Reservation or ticket number.

7. The system will tell u which segments are available for upgrade request.

Note: If you are travelling with miles you can be upgraded with ecoupons if you are an elite member who booked in limited seats miles.

The Spanish page makes a lot more sense than the English page which is ambiguous at best

But I think it is still unclear.

Si eres Socio LifeMiles, puedes utilizar tus e-Coupons para ascensos a Clase Ejecutiva sólo con boletos tarifa precio regular.

Which is confusing because you can use them for any paid international segment (apart from Europe) so promo as well as regular.

Also says (which I had not seen before)

Adicionalmente, cuando redimes un tiquete en el producto Todos los Asientos puedes aplicar a la postulación con e-Coupons, tanto en viajes internacionales como domésticos.

I am not an elite so I understand I can use the coupons in


Redemptions for higher values (all seats)
Any paid international Y fare
Domestic fares that are not promo fares


Just noticed that business class limited seat redemptions require fewer lifemiles than unlimited seat economy redemptions. So pretty pointless then, there is good availability of business redemptions

The option to redeem e-coupons has now vanished from the LifeMiles website. I can see how many I have but I cannot redeem them.

Anyone tried this lately? I have asked LifeMiles what the score is, I await their reply

Say it ain't so! Since the first post in this thread I have not had a qualifying flight I don't think.

So you apply e-coupons and nothing happens? No space in biz? Which routes?

I want to see if I can use them on BOG SJO HAV LIM MEX

I have tried to use them on Taca, lately Taca is having a huge number of elite members, I can see it every time they pre board elite and at baggage claims, e coupons upgrade request are processed after they upgraded all lifemiles silver elite, that's the reason I have tried the routes TGU/SAP to MIA, GUA, SAL and MCO maybe it's different on avian a flights ( I guess you are using avian a) let me know how are e coupons upgrades there
