It's that time to start booking the EOY trip. I am staying in LA this year. I booked two hotels and not sure which one I am staying in yet. I imagine there will be lots of big "end of the world" parties going on...

Home again in NYC. Traveling over New Years, particularly anywhere warm, is outrageously expensive. A few years ago I actually flew to SYD on NYE. I was living in Hell's Kitchen and that was one place you did not want to be on NYE (unless you like hearing and seeing disgustingly drunk people fighting on the street.)
It was a great flight. I got upgrade to business and the flight was nearly empty. When I left NYC it was 25 degrees and starting to snow and when I landed in SYD on January 2 it was sunny and 80 degrees.

Good choice. I would also visit MoMA first, then dine. For the full circle experience.

Last place on earth I would celebrate NYE. Been there twice and both times the crowds were beyond unbearable and you couldn't get anywhere near Times Square unless you arrived 12 hours in advance and stood there in the cold for hours. Better to spend NYE in South Beach or Palm Springs. Or if you must go to NYC, celebrate in a bar that's AWAY from Times Square.

Your best bet would be to go to Industry on 52nd between 8th ave and 9th ave (across from Therapy). It is a new bar that opened up this year and it is probably the biggest bar in Hells Kitchen. On NYE in NYC, you would probably want to go to one where there is a lot of space (no matter how big, it still will be quite crowded, wherever you go).

I have been wanting to check Industry out and it is near my hotel. Two years ago we went to Vlada after midnight after being in Times square and it was dead and then the ritz was pretty busy (but not nearly as busy as I have seen it on most weekends) and last year we went to Posh and fore New Years being on a friday it wasn't too packed. I am just not up for dealing with Times Square this year.

I will probably be working - by my own choice, so I'm not complaining. The final performance of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company is New Year's Eve - it disbands after.
It's something I'd want to be there for even if I were not reporting.
Regarding Bar Boulud - I had brunch there a bit back and it was lovely.
