Hi

Any views on the Hilton in Colombo? Is this the best option in town, or are the Ta or Oberoi better?

It is nice with a good view of the Ocean. Just don't breath too deeply when you step out in the morning (or anywhere in the city for that matter)!

Good Luck

There are two Hiltons now. I've stayed the Hilton near the World Trade Center a few times and also once at the Oberoi. I would choose the Hilton. I don't know any other hotels there but Hilton is decent. An ocean view room I find quite nice. But other than that, nothing really special. The other Hilton, JAIC tower, is an apartment complex for long-term stays but also lets you do short-term as well. It's much cheaper.

with a name like Swanhunter you clearly have a fine respect for history http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif , so why not stay at the Galle Face - slightly faded/chipped at the edges, but if it's good enough for ...(wanders off into distance, muttering names of minor celebrities from years gone by)

Bump.

Thinking of staying at the Hilton (or the Galle Face) for new years... anybody have any new experiences they want to add?

Thanks
Ron

Galle face has lots of history and is right on sea front. Very old and shows it in places but has lots of character. Large rooms, sturdy beds, old furniture, strong smell of mothballs and floor polish. You can go out in the morning saying goodbye to someone polishing a statue and come back four hours later to find him still polishing it. The lobster thermidor is nice, eaten ooutside, right next to the sea. mmmm must stop talking about food. No wonder I,m a fat boy.

how about the area? are there things to do?

I've never been to Sri Lanka and I'm basically trying to book this via the internet, so I'm not too sure about what I'm doing...

The Galle Face hotel is very unique in Columbo. Salt water pool, great history.

If you really want to have a unique experience, try a few days in www.ulpotha.com...only (http://www.ulpotha.com...only) if you are willing to rough just a bit for a completely unique Sri Lankan Experience.

When in Columbo, be sure to visit Paradise Road, Odells and Barefoot for shopping.

I am traveling to Columbo as stated above. Does anyone have any current information about the two properties?

Since I will be Sri Lanka for just 2 nights arriving at noon on day one and leaving at 1300 on day three, should the time be spent in Columbo? or Kandy?

Due to SQ retiming my flights, I now have one night in Columbo. Any recommendations would be welcomed.

Will the Hilton allow late (very late) checkout for a Diamond?

Thanks

I've stayed 50+ nights here in the past few years. The staff are fantastic, especially once they recognize you as a frequent guest.

Rooms are nothing special, but they put on a pretty good breakfast spread, and if you have gold status the evening spread in the lounge is excellent as well. A few decent restaurants, and a useable gym although a bit worn down by western standards.

Any specific questions just ask.
