Sixt - Sixt Platinum Member Question

Hey -
Quick question. I'm heading to Lyon France in February of 2012. One of the benefits of Platinum is a complimentary one class upgrade. I'm thinking about grabbing a 1-series. However, the upgrade for one class would likely take me into a Peugeot, Renault, or an Opel. The logical 1 class upgrade would be a 1 series --> 3 series. Does anyone know if I would get stuck in a Peugeot, or if I were to book a 1-series how likely it would be to get into a 3-series.
Thanks!

Upgrades are dependant on availability, in some places I have had nice ones in others none.
My guess would be you would get a Laguna/Passat. Book a Passat and the upgrade(if given) should be to 3 series or similar

Hey -
The logical 1 class upgrade would be a 1 series --> 3 series.
Why? because there are 2 other classes between the 1 and the 3 series?

No, I just don't understand how 1-series --> Passat is an upgrade. I'll just book a 1-Series.

I am Sixt Platinum and everytime I booked a 1 Series, I was given a 3 Series. But upgrades being on availability, your experience may be totally different from mine.
Renault, Peugeot or Opel are clearly most of the fleets at French rentals but these always come with a stick. So pretend you can't drive a stick (they won't question that as you're from the USA where automatic transmission is the standard) as only 3 Series and up come with automatic transmission (they'll probably tell you it's a favor as a Platinum when they only want to save their clutch...)

Thanks for the advice! I'd prefer a stick, but can play dumb if it gets me into a nicer car.

Cheers - from personal experience, I'm led to believe that you will be upgraded max to an A-Class or B-Class Mercedes Automatic if you really require it.
Otherwise, if you do not require automatic, I'd very much say that you should be getting a Passat / Laguna -max.
A BMW 1 is in the French "Compact" (C-group) range, and I'd hardly believe that even being Platinum, they'd get you to a 3-Series, which is in the "Full" (F-group) range.
A much better bet (in my opinion) would be to target the 3-series directly, if you may get a good quote. Gary Coughlan (see above answer) and his SIXT UK team have been of great assistance to me in the past on trying to find good deals. You might also try directly with SIXT or via web comparators.
Added bonus: as a Platinum holder, if you can get your upgrade honored, you should go from the F-group (3-series) to the next - P-group, or Premium, as 5-series, no less!
Otherwise, you may just as well get a great drive in the 3-series, and you should certainly (at least) be offered Automatic for the price of Manual (so, again, don't book FDAR, but FDMR), and again from personal experience, both BMWs and Mercedes in this range from SIXT are just good fun - brand new or low mileage mid (150-200 hp) diesel engines, navigation and sportsy interior.
Good luck, and beware of French Radars!!
Regards, P.

Do remember that there are other cars in your group,Golf and A class. There is no gurantee that you will get a 1 series. I do not know what they have there but in other places I have seen Opel zafiras with auto so that is also not likely to get you a 3 series.
As said if that is what you want then book one and request a BMW,or you you might get a Mercedes or Volvo

Thanks for all the tips everyone! I'll book a 1 series, and specifically request a BMW. Normally, I wouldn't care BMW/Volvo/MB/Audi, etc. but the girlfriend's dad is a big shot a BMW, and we're using the car for a Lyon --> Munich drive. I am sure everyone can appreciate why I don't want to show up and meet "the family" for the first time sporting the 3 point star.

No, I just don't understand how 1-series --> Passat is an upgrade. I'll just book a 1-Series.
it is because bmw 1 is compact and passat is larger (intermediate i believe). and i would prefer a passat over a bmw 1 which is quite small.
