Travel Photography - Cameraphone recommendations

I ditched my compact camera years ago and now travel with a cameraphone. Occasionally I'll bring a DSLR. Most of my pics are taken with a cameraphone, year round.
My latest pick of cameraphone is Nokia N8. It might be the best camera on a phone currently. Xenon flash that even exposes close to correctly even when using macro. Best flash handling I've ever seen in a cameraphone.
The OS? I haven't explored the smart stuff much.. The biggest drawback is lack of some apps I absolutely need. I looove the GPS and maps, though.
What's your cameraphone recommendation, and why?
I will not even consider a phone that doesn't have a Xenon flash, but that's just me.

Would highly recommend the iPhone 4s. The picture quality is absolutely stunning with the 8MP and the quality lens on it. Allows more light into the lens which gives you sharper results. Shoots at f2.4 ap too.
Features like HDR will give you results next best to a decent camera. Adding to this, the app store has many editing apps which will no doubt give you a quality eco all round.
Obviously, you need to use a real camera and do some comparisons.
F/2.4 is a step in the right direction, but not near enough to overcome the inherent pixel density of 8MP on such a tiny sensor.
If you only view on a screen at "normal" sizes with little/no crop, then, yes, the differences might be small enough, but start printing anything over 5x7 and you'll quickly see the limitations of a tiny sensor.

The new HTC smart phones are good... but still nothing compare to a real camera.. :)

+1 on the 4S I ditched my P&S after I got this phone :)
I do the same -- always use my cameraphone cause i rarely bring my DSLR. I have a BlackBerry Bold 9900 and it's always provided me with great quality day shots. It gets very grainy and is poor quality at night. I used it on my trip to Indonesia a couple years ago and I have over 200 great photos from the trip!

On my recent trip to China, I brought along my T1i and, for the first-time ever, no point & shoot. Left the Fuji EXR100 at home and took over 300 photos with my iPhone4S. That is indeed one nice little camera! It is not a substitute for a real camera (something beyond most point & shoots), and if you work it hard, you'll discover its limitations. But at the same time, you'll also be blown away by the things it can do.
Very impressed by what a very tiny sensor can do.

Im very impressed with the quality of the photos my Samsung Galaxy S2 takes.
The iPhone 4S is very very good for its purpose. It covers 90% of the photos you will want to take, and takes them well.
The other 10% belongs to badly lit conditions, or times you wish you have zoom.

My cell carrier doesn't like/use/carry iPhones and any other phone with a nice camera requires a data plan! So dumb! Does anyone know if I could get an iPhone (used or something) and just use it as a camera? I bring along a DSLR but for in flight pictures I'd like something that somewhat resembles a phone so it's not quite as obvious.

if you don't want a data plan on your phone, that's going to be a bit tricky. you could go with an ipod touch which has a camera (don't think it's the same as the 4S camera though)

That's the problem, it doesn't...they were very skimpy with the iTouch. I have an iTouch with a camera. Talk about CRAPPY. A 0.7 megapixel camera vs. the iPhone's either 5mp or 8mp (the newest is 8!) sensor. Absolutely insane the difference. They really make you pay. I'm sad about that because I would like to be able to take pictures with a phone that weren't crappy but definitely can't afford the extra $50 a month for a data plan.
