We are traveling to the Homestead Speedway, but are looking to stay a night in Miami. Somewhere nice but not too expensive, stuff to do within walking distance, and not too difficult to travel back and forth from Homestead. Any suggestions? :D

Welcome to FlyerTalk, and thanks for visiting South Florida - please spend liberally! :D :D

Coral Gables would seem to meet most of the requirements. Good hotels (some with weekend rates if still available), nice/relatively safe neighborhood, good shopping/restaurants (Miracle Mile area, also Books & Books, probably the best bookstore in Florida).

On race morning, you can drive west on Bird Road to pick up the Turnpike southbound for the trek down to the race track.

More important in the MIA area than where to go is where NOT TO GO unarmed.

Liberty City, Overtown, Northside, Carol City, Opalocka, Little Haiti, West Coconut Grove, Goulds, Cutler , Pompano, Naranja, Brownsville, etc. etc. etc.

Miami isn't a very walkable city unless you are confining yourself to South Beach. It is very big, spread out, and many parts are very dangerous, especially to someone that doesn't know their way around.
