Managed to get some awards for an Italy NewYears trip, and I have a couple of questions.

What should I expect weather wise? will be landing in Rome on the 30th, renting a car and driving down to Sorrento for a few days, then back up to Rome for two nights and then fly back to the land of ice-and-snow.

As I will be driving between the two, what should I expect as far as traffic, and tolls?

We want to pack as light as possible, so unless I'm told differently, we don't plan on bringing the parkas ;) , but still want to be prepared.

Thanks

I'm sorry to say that winter in southern Italy is normally sort of dismal. Expect cool temperature (but above freezing), consistently overcast skies, and nearly constant drizzle.

although it never snows or freezes in rome(???), i have been there twice in snow. you of course will not need parkas, if coming from WI.. i would check into car safety in sorrento, to the place that i would consider train.

tolls are about a dime a mile....same as dallas.

i would think the trucks would do holiday until the second, but you are driving a short way.

Considered the train, but my wife travels with a mobility scooter and I figured that renting a car would mean just a little less hassle with getting the scooter, and our luggage from place to place. We come into FCO at about noon, and will go directly to Sorrento. Staying at the Sorrento Hilton until the 2nd, and then heading back up to the Rome Cavalieri for two nights before flying back out of FCO. Probably won't be doing much driving other than airport to hotel to hotel to airport.

Possibly stopping at Pompeii on the trip from Sorrento to Rome.

I was also wondering if anyone knew anything about the Sorrento New Years eve celebrations? I've heard that they do a kind of block party, but haven't seen anything specific for this year
