What single quality will you bring to Talkboard? Brevity counts in the answer.
TalkBoard Elections/11 - Question 1: What single quality will you bring to Talkboard?View Full Version : Question 1: What single quality will you bring to Talkboard? SanDiego1K Nov 4, 11, 11:11 am What single quality will you bring to Talkboard? Brevity counts in the answer. Jinxy Nov 4, 11, 11:19 am Fairness and an open mind, as well as an abundance of patience. Being non US based can let you step out the heated discussions and form your own decisions based on what you think and source. dchristiva Nov 4, 11, 12:15 pm Knowing what I do not know and being willing to acknowledge that. My voice will be heard and I will take the lead on topics where I have constructive advice/suggestions/recommendations, but I will defer to other "experts" when my experience level dictates. nsx Nov 4, 11, 12:58 pm Ability to build consensus. I am proud that I was able to bring the TalkBoard together to resolve an issue that had failed to win a 2/3 majority in either direction for several years: that of how to count abstentions. I gathered input from all the TB members and wrote a proposal that I thought had 6 votes. One of my 6 decided it wasn't quite good enough, but I was able to persuade two other TB members who had opposed earlier versions to support my proposal. It passed 7-2 (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/town-hall-official-talkboard-voting-decisions/1245673-motion-passed-amend-talkboard-guidelines-requirements-motions-pass.html). In a nutshell, under the old rules an abstention had exactly the same effect as a No vote. This meant that there was no way to vote Present without affecting the outcome of the vote. Once I explained this fact well, I got the necessary votes for this proposal, so we now count Abstain as Present rather than as No. A second aspect of the proposal requires 5 Yes votes, assuming that the TalkBoard is operating with its full 9 members. The old rules would have allowed a 2-1 vote to succeed if the other 6 members did not participate. CMK10 Nov 4, 11, 1:29 pm Well I can touch my nose with my tongue, it's usually a big hit at parties if we've all been drinking enough. In all seriousness, I like I will bring a youthful vigor and energy to the Talkboard. Flyertalk seems to be increasingly populated by younger types and at the tender age of 26, I can speak to that and provide empathy to their issues. I will be proud to represent that demographic. goalie Nov 4, 11, 1:57 pm I’m running for TalkBoard because I believe I have something good to offer and after being a member of an incredible family for 7 years, it’s time to get off the bench and into the goal crease to do my part. I will be completely honest in saying that I do like to stir the pot and sometimes that is a good thing. I will not rubber stamp, nor vote along “party lines,” but rather I will look at all issues objectively and fairly. If I have one viewpoint, but someone can give me a valid (n.b. valid) argument to “vote the other way” that will be considered-I’m not saying I will vote that way, but I will listen to it objectively and then make my decision accordingly for what I think is best for Flyertalk as a whole. dinoscool3 Nov 4, 11, 2:08 pm I will bring youth, being a teen, I can bring the view points of the young FTers into TalkBoard, and make sure they are heard. kipper Nov 4, 11, 2:24 pm Since I've been a member for 7 years, but never served on TalkBoard before or as a moderator, I'll bring a different perspective: that of a general FlyerTalk member. I tend to have a unique perspective on things, am able to understand others' perspectives, respect their opinions, and consider how changes and new policies will affect members. frubio2012 Nov 4, 11, 2:27 pm I will bring friendship. :). Never before have I been able to communicate with several other people, let alone thousands, who all love one thing---flying. I am very easy-going, nice, and very personable. I always welcome people with open doors. :) United747 Nov 4, 11, 2:28 pm I feel that I will bring equality to the Talkboard. I will give undivided attention to every single topic that comes up. If I do not favor a topic that is coming to a vote, I will still look at both sides of the story and attempt to make an informed vote. Also, not to copy everyone else, I am also young. Delta747 Ancien Maestro Nov 4, 11, 2:29 pm Consensus Building is a quality I would bring to the board as well.. Its important to work well with those from different backgrounds and situations, to bring to a resolution issues at hand. As a Commercial Property landlord.. A landlord of Multi-Family Residential, and Single Family housing units.. and owner/lender of a Mortgage Company here in Calgary.. Consensus Building.. getting deals done, is pretty much my business. Putting out fires, is a regular part of the routine as well.. Aside from business, my family includes my wife and 2 small kids.. getting the kids to cooperate and keeping harmony in the house is a daily deal. Also, my experience as a current director of a not-for-profit and desire to serve, is consensus building experience I would bring onto the table.. belfordrocks Nov 4, 11, 5:00 pm I am also young but I guess that doesn't count for much now... ;) I like seeing change and am always willing to work forwards to achieve that change. I like seeing Flyertalk build up even more from its current status and each Talkboard proposal means that we are given an opportunity to move forward. ryandc99 Nov 4, 11, 5:34 pm I bring a young fresh energetic attitude with great ideas and enthusiasm for Flyertalk. RichMSN Nov 4, 11, 10:26 pm I bring the ability to handle conflict and work with others. In my real life, I'm in a sales organization where I have to be able to quickly make my company's case to a group of people who are sometimes disinterested. In my alter ego, I'm a sports official -- I referee HS and college baseball, basketball, and football. Being able to communicate with players, coaches, and administrators is a very important part of the job I've done over the last 25 years and I've learned that a key part of the job is to listen (REALLY listen) to what is said and accept that at times you may have to tell someone that you were wrong, that you made an incorrect call or decision. jackal Nov 5, 11, 12:53 am Gosh, I thought *I* was the young one on FT! I'm only one year older than CMK10, though. ;) I will continue to bring a progressive mindset of continual improvement on FT. I'm never satisfied with the status quo, and if there's an opportunity to try to make FlyerTalk a better place, I'll support it. kokonutz Nov 5, 11, 7:55 am Righteous indignation. I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore. Enough with the consensus building. Enough with abusing the posters. Time to saddle up and give the posters respect, create forums without forcing folks to jump through hoops and clean up the profiteers who want to use us to line their pockets. #occupyFlertalk!!!!!!!!!!! joshwex90 Nov 5, 11, 10:43 am Thank you dinoscool3 for ensuring that I'm NOT the youngest candidate! I think what I bring is better goal-scoring abilities than goalie ;) Seriously, I bring a lot of what others here bring. By the very fact the people here are running, we've all shown our commitment to FT, and I don't doubt for a second that each one of us brings something exciting to the table. Being young apparently means nothing this year, but I also bring diplomacy, from schooling and work, something that can only help when it comes to TB votes, or creating newbie lounges, something I've heard from multiple FTers as something they'd like to see. goalie Nov 5, 11, 10:58 am .....I think what I bring is better goal-scoring abilities than goalie ;)...Ahem.....Prior to stopping pucks, I was a left wing and not half bad at that with three 20 goal seasons (with each season 18 games plus playoffs) ;) Ok-now back to business...:) joshwex90 Nov 5, 11, 11:02 am Ahem.....Prior to stopping pucks, I was a left wing and not half bad at that with three 20 goal seasons (with each season 18 games plus playoffs) ;) Ok-now back to business...:) :D And there you have it! Hockey fans have two great FTers to vote for! (Maybe we can organize a hockey-DO!) FlyerChrisK Nov 6, 11, 12:08 am I offer my youth and willingness to consider new ideas to TalkBoard. Interesting that age is coming into all this. Most of the candidates haven't stated their age, gender or nationality which I actually think is a good thing. goalie Nov 6, 11, 8:17 am Interesting that age is coming into all this. Most of the candidates haven't stated their age, gender or nationality which I actually think is a good thing. I'm somewhere between 21 and 121 (or between alive and dead, if that makes it easier). I'm day-to-day. We're all day-to-day. For those that think youth is a good quality, it can just as easily be turned around to say that there are many of us that are longer in the tooth that have skills and experience that are just as important or maybe even more so depending on your viewpoint. Or in the words of the sage, P.J. O'Rourke, "Age and Guile Beat Youth, Innocence, and a Bad Haircut." To me, age is not really all that relevant. I'm more interested in the substance of the candidate and not whether they were born after 1985. I am envious of goalie, though. Hockey is the world's greatest sport and if I had learned to skate I would certainly be refereeing it instead of basketball in the winter. dinoscool3 Nov 6, 11, 9:50 am I'm somewhere between 21 and 121 (or between alive and dead, if that makes it easier). Yes, but youth is also more willing to learn, so voters can turn the youth runnie to how they think. ;) Also, youth like to represented (I feel), and like to know they are represented. kipper Nov 6, 11, 10:42 am Yes, but youth is also more willing to learn, so voters can turn the youth runnie to how they think. ;) Also, youth like to represented (I feel), and like to know they are represented. My experience, as a bit of a not quite young, but not quite old, can be summed up by what a wise person told me when I was about 18... When you reach 30, you'll be amazed at how much your parents have learned from the time you turned 18 until when you turn 30. :D goalie Nov 6, 11, 11:02 am I'm somewhere between 21 and 121 (or between alive and dead, if that makes it easier). Age is only a number as there are many old <insert my Boston accent> fahts who some might think of as stubborn yet are much more willing to change/listen to change than youngun's and vice-versa. It all depends on the individual. joshwex90 Nov 6, 11, 3:26 pm All this talk of age reminds me of the numerous "looking young and being elite" threads. At a certain point, age doesn't matter - actions matter. canforce Nov 7, 11, 1:40 am An easy to understand open approach. Far too many times I have seen people jumped on, made fun of or even ridiculed for their questions and views. Not everyone has years of experience, and we should be embracing their entry to the conversation. CMK10 Nov 7, 11, 1:14 pm Interesting that age is coming into all this. Most of the candidates haven't stated their age, gender or nationality which I actually think is a good thing. Hey, it was the first thing that came to mind, plus I was the first person to mention it so I'm a little smug I started a trend among some people :D |
