I am going to Hong Kong in March for 5 nights en route to Thailand with my family and am struggling with hotels.
I am looking for a good 4*/5* hotel but my children are 3 and 7 years old so we either need a family suite (which no conventional hotel booking website seems to account for) or two interconnecting rooms - which often ramps up the price quite considerably.
Ideally would like to be on HK island but probably will get more for the £ in Kowloon.
Has anyone got either...
1. A great travel agent who can point me in the right direction
2. Local knowledge of a hotel I can approach directly
3. A website that 'works' with this family dynamic
Any comments much appreciated :)

I would pop into the Hong Kong Forum

Where hotel choice is constantly up for debate :D
I suspect the regulars there may be of more use, although plenty of folk here frequent hong kong. I enjoyed a great time at the IC Grand Standford and the IC Hong Kong, but both would need connecting rooms for your requirements I think.

Thanks - I have tried the IC but they are going to get back to me and I've stayed at the Grand Stanford before but wasn't overwhelmed. Liked the pool on the roof though.
MODS - feel free to move into the HKG forum. I'm not sure I'm allowed to post this twice am I?

When I went to HKG (11 years ago now and I was only 18!) I stayed at The Salisbury, a hotel managed by YMCA. A group of four of us stayed in a corner suite and it was great. There was a master bedroom with a double bed, a sofa double bed, and a living room which they put another two double beds in.
Do not be put off by the fact that it is YMCA managed. The rooms, at least the room I was in, was definitely 4 star standard.
Plenty of room for a family with four kids, and when I looked at the prices again a couple of years ago they were very, very reasonably by HKG standards.
The hotel is right next to The Peninsula with easy access to Star Ferry and many other of the good things in HKG.
So they have rooms meeting your criteria, they are reasonable on price and the location is great. Take a look...

TO get started, take a look at the Harbour Plaza Metropolis, Kowloon - it's rated as a 4 star property - linked on tripadvisors.com with reviews & photos, some of them w. photos specifically for 1 bedroom suite, essentially the size of 2 connecting rooms at about 460 sq. ft. total - small by our standards here in the US but typical given H.K.'s expensive real estate. Has a Queen-sized bed (they refer to as doubles?) plus a pullout sofa bed (single) or rollaway bed in living area, kitchen & small dining area and 1 bathroom for sharing.
Some of the reviews are mixed, but this high-rise is situated inside a large shopping complex, with western style supermarket, restaurants, shops and laundry (charged by the pounds, very inexpensive) and the MTR train station is directly across the street/connected by a sky bridge, taxi stand & major bus transportation hub. Last stop on the A21 (if i recall correctly) airport express double-decker bus (air conditioned with luggage racks) & about 60 to 75 minutes ride thru town's busy Nathan Road, or can be reached by the Airport Express train with a free shuttle transfer (plus taxi, of course.)
It's in Hung Hom section of Kowloon, near the reclaimed waterfront, not populated with tourists everywhere, but with 4 of you traveling, a taxi ride to most places in town would be just as good and it's not expensive by western standards. With many stores an easy 5 minutes walk (indoor too) - you can explore & shop around, and not feel stranded with room services or on-premises restaurants. At night, you have great views of the Victoria harbour depending on your suite's location, especially from higher floors.
I randomly picked 5 days next March, it looked like the Deluxe 1 BR Suite for 2 adults is around HKD $2,200 per day + 10% service charge, zero taxes or $2,422, at current exchange rate is around USD $315/daily or less. It's probably best to see if you can find a local travel agent that specialize in bookings to HK to see if they can quote & confirm a lower, discounted rates for your dates of stay (they do year-round package deals with Cathay Pacific) - or email/fax them directly to request best available rates for 2 adults and 2 children, please be advised that they will likely have additional bedding charge for the children.
This should get you started & I'm sure the experts will jump in with their short lists, pro's & con's - cheers !

Can anyone recommend a place to stay from 8th-10th (2 nights) something within 20 min of central? I am looking more along the lines of a motel at $150 at the most/night but everything is about $400+

Basically, the city is booked up for Wed 11/9, which is why you see the ridiculous rates. If you want to spend no more than $150, you'll need to go look for guesthouses in mixed-use buildings, and not real hotels.
Anyways, for a more-or-less real hotel, and actually happens to be in Central, the Minden Place is bookable on Asiahotels.com. US$554 all-in for those 2 nights.

Try the Courtyard Marriott in West Hong Kong Island. The MTR does not reach there but plenty of buses close by, along with the tram which will take you to Central. Can sometimes be Pricelined for around $100USD per night so it should fit your budget, and it's a 4* hotel.

Yes, but not for those dates. The Courtyard wants HK$2,800 or US$360 a night for Nov 8-10. I highly doubt they're releasing inventory to Priceline for US$100 when the whole city is asking for US$300+ a room.

We stayed in Royal Plaza in Mongkok, each to their own but I prefer Kowloon side these days for the real "HK experience". They have family rooms and can be got for a very good price. Very near the night markets and the MTR from where you can get everywhere really quickly anyway.
