Hi everyone!

I'm looking at traveling to SIN from Jan 4-6 2012 and will need 2 nights stay. I am on a tighter budget so I'm looking for something around $100USD...

I saw quite a few budget hotels for ~$50-$60 near the Geylong area... I read that that's the red light district in Singapore, but the reviews on TripAdvisor seems to be mixed (from "stay away" to "still suitable for families with young children"). While the price is quite appealing for me and the area seems easily accessible by MRT, I am a solo female traveler so I'm a bit worried about my safety...

I'm pretty confident that I can bid for the Grand Mercure for under $100 on Priceline (it's seems to be listed on Hotwire Hot Rates for $98USD)... for this property I am more concerned about commuting around...

Thanks for your tips in advance!

Hi,

i wouldnt recommend to stay in the Geylang area. Its a bustling place dotted with a lot of good food, Karaoke bars and the red light district.
It can be quite disturbing to get back to the Hotel after dark.
I would rather stay around the Bencoolen area (for example the Strand Hotel, Bencoolen Hotel, the IBIS Bencoolen) which is close to Bugis MRT Station. Quite esay to get around and also some good food in that area.

The Roxy Grand Mercure offers quite good value for money and the location is not as bad as it seems. The beach is nearby (some rooms offer partial sea view) and the shopping centre Parkway Parade is just opposite. The famous "Katong Laksa" (a noodle dish in a coconutmilk brooth) can be found at East Coast Rd nearby. There also some very nice eateries (including a hawker centre) in that area.
But to get to the city is a bit tricky. The only way is either by taxi or by bus (there are some direct buses to the Orchard Area, takes around 20 to 30 min).

Likewise, try to avoid Geylang Hotels as I personally think that they are only good for those transiting passangers in Singapore. Grand Mercure however is a very good hotel, probably as good as our Grand Hyatt here in Canada saying that Asian Chain Hotels are mostly far beyond par compare to ours here in North America.

Don't too worry about transportation in Singapore. MRT (subway line) are very efficient and taxi are very cheap. In addition, the whole country is not bigger than Richmond area in Vancouver :-) Taxi ride from corner to corner will take at max 25-30 minutes....beautiful country, amazing food, and cheap....Enjoy your trip..

Thanks for the suggestions... I was able to pocket the Grand Mercure Roxy for $87USD per night for the nights I'm staying... quite happy with it (and super excited!!) :D
