Hilton HHonors - Hampton Inn & Suites Memphis Peabody

Has anyone stayed at this hotel? It's running $120 for the weekend I want, which seems expensive. However, I am hilton gold, and if this hotel is very nice, and abides by the hilton upgrade policy, then it would probably be worth the money.

Hampton's don't really have an upgrade policy. I think the TOS even says that upgrades don't apply to suites at Hampton's. Are you sure the $120 isn't already for a suite?

$120 is for a standard room. A king suite is $210.

There are some HIs out there that are better than your average Hilton. If this is one of those, I have no problem spending $120 for a room, especially if I have a good chance of being upgraded.

do not expect to be upgraded at any Ham Inn or Ham Inn&Suites. Yes its happened but its not the norm, nor by HH rules must they. Also keep in mind you ONLY get 100 miles for the stay.
there is a Hilton in Memphis,(on the east side of town there all the HH rules would apply)

That Hilton's location is not convenient for most tourist attractions though. Hampton Inn And Suites Peabody is very well located for a weekend stay, between the Peabody hotel and Beale Street, next to the new Peabody Place (shopping and entertainment center). Not sure about the quality of rooms and service.

Call the hotel directly to ask about specials. Being in Memphis, I would say the location is fairly good for site seeing. The price seems high but you will be paying for d the tourist area. There is a trolley system close by to get you from one end of Main to other, being the Pyramid/Pinch District. Try TJ Mulligans, Erika's German Restraunt and of course the Rendevous for "dry" ribs, Interstate or Corkys for "wet"style. Oh back to your question.... I can 't comment on the rooms or if you would even receive some type of upgrade (i'm gold myself). There are the casinos down the hwy at Tunica MS and some Hotels offer transport service to them. Most of us Feds stay out "east" to get better rates. There is not much public transportation to get you around like Atlanta, you will need a car. If you need to be downtown that is the place..Be careful and have a wonderful Memphis time!

I think the hotel is worth $120. I was there three weekends ago, and it was $175, so I used points instead. I have stayed there twice, and was upgraded to a suite both times, even in a sold out situation. As far as you receiving a fixed number of points for your stay, you will actually received the normal number of points based on your level in the HHonors, just as if you were actually staying at a Hilton.

What was the layout of the suite? Would it accomodate 4 people? I assume some had 2 doubles and a pull-out sofa.

Thank you.

I actually work at a Hampton in Memphis, although not at the downtown location. $120 on a weekend is a steal for the downtown Hampton. It is almost always sold out on weekends, and has a great location.

As for upgrades, I believe that Hampton Inn and Suite locations DO upgrade gold and diamonds to suites based on availablility, but if they are sold out, I'm not sure your chances. Might do you good to call ahead of time (ask for Aisha -she's great) and request an upgrade?

Keep in mind most other hotels in downtown are easily $150+ on weekends.

Regulator of Fun -- craz was talking about airline miles credit ("double dipping") rather than HH points. While HH points are given at Hampton Inn properties at the same rate as the rest of the Hilton family (10 points per $ spent, plus tier-based bonus), only 100 airline miles is given in "double dipping" compared to 500 miles for the rest of Hiltons, DoubleTrees, etc.

And welcome to Flyertalk!

If money is a major consideration, there is a Best Western Benchmark hotel right across the street from the Peabody. It usually is available for about $70, but is somewhat dumpy (not worse than most US Best Westerns though).

We stayed at the Hampton Peabody last weekend. It is a terrific hotel! We paid $130 per night and (as a Gold Honors member) got a two room suite with a large balcony. The kitchen is well appointed. The front desk staff answer the phone with a line about being an award winning hotel. When I asked them about the awards earned they answered with great pride. Several times I saw the GM roaming around inspecting things.

Our room was spotlessly clean and pleasantly decorated. The bed was comfortable. We were given a couple of bottles of water, chocolate and cookies at checkin. The staff is top notch and can't do enough to try and please. The pool area is immaculate and the exercise room is better than most. There is complimentary use of the business center. Also handy is the coin operated laudry. The location is very convenient for tourists.

In addition the hotel has a strong relationship with an excellent driver who truly welcomed us to Memphis.

The front desk laughed with us as we schlepped our bags to the trolley to spend night #2 (out of 3) at the downtown Marriott on a free stay. But, they sincerely welcomed us back on night #3.

All points and bonuses were in my account within 24 hours. Just a delightful experience.

Just wanted to add an update to this thread. We stayed at the Hampton Inn and Suites Peabody Place on Beale last weekend and had the exact same experience as paradocs stated on Sept 24, 2002. We were upgraded to a two room suite with a great balcony as HH gold and loved the location. It can't be beat for a night on Beale Street. Prices are high - we paid $179.00 with a AAA rate, but for downtown Memphis, that's the norm.

Anything else to say about this location?

I will be there on business and need a night during the week, I've looked and its expensive and although I'm on gov't per diem, i'd go over a bit if it was reasonable.. what would you think the best I could do on a weeknight at this property?

the week would be a mon or Tues.. either the week of the 19th or 26th of feb.. right now I'm finding a low of $175 which I'd probably never pay for any HI

If it's worth the price depends on what you want to do - if you want to check out Beale St and not drive after drinking, the HI Peabody is the best choice. Beale St is sort of like a much smaller scale Bourbon Street - lots of clubs with live music, good local food - rib joints (Rendevous is my favorite, in a nearby alley - ask the front desk for directions). However, if you are in town for anything else, I would opt for one of the cheaper Hilton options, probably the HI on Poplar or Homewood Poplar, chosen solely on price. I'd avoid the HI Medical Center (not the best area) and the HI West Memphis (across the river in Arkansas - cheap for a reason), but most other Hilton choices are good. If you decide to stay downtown, you need to walk across to the Peobody Hotel and have a drink in the great lobby, and see the ducks (they have a home on the roof and you can see them there if you miss the ducks walking through the lobby around 11:00 am, I think). Also check out the Gibson guitar factory, in the Beale Street area. However, if you are going to be driving anyway, save the money and don't pay the downtown premium. I think parking is another $15 or so at the Hampton Inn Peobody Place. A nice hotel, but pricey! Hope this helps you decide. I personally think the nicest hotel in downtown Memphis is the Madison, but it's not a hilton property if you are looking to earn points. The Peobody is a great place, but I've never had a great room there.

This property is a great choice for a long weekend type trip to Memphis. Make it your base and you can rent a car for a day to travel down to Clarksdale etc. The location is superb and -- in response to the poster who said the price is out of the range for a Hampton Inn -- I have heard it said numerous times that this is one of the (if not the) nicest Hamptons. If you look at location, quality and amenities vs. price this is a superb choice for visiting Beale St & vicinity.

Would you happen to know how it compares with the Holiday Inn Select around the corner?

Peabody has ducks and they're adorable... not a bad little place to snooze a night or two. Just make sure you get some Mephis Style barbeque while you're there. You won't find better barbeque in all of America!

The Holiday Inn is not nearly as nice as the Hampton Inn, but the location is about the same. The Hampton has a brand new upscale feel and the Holiday feels like an old hotel. I've stayed at both places and much prefer the Hampton. As a HH gold, I've always been upgraded to a balcony two room suite at the Hampton and have always found it to be very, very clean. It has a really nice lobby with a large seating area with a fireplace and good security (you have to have a key to get on the elevator and the elevator faces the reception desk). I know that Hampton Inns are not usually considered upscale, but outside of the Peabody and the Madison, the Hampton Inn is by far the most upscale choice in downtown Memphis, in my opinion. If you are looking to save money and walk a little farther to Beale St., there is a Comfort Inn downtown that is a cheaper choice - seemed older but clean when I stayed there in July, 2005. I would not walk back there late at night - we took a cab from Beale to the Comfort Inn last year, a very short inexpensive ride, but we felt it was unsafe to walk back, even with a group, at 1:00 am.

Memphis food suggestions - Brother Junipers near the University of Memphis for breakfast, Le Chardoney on Overton Square for a glass of wine, Fino's From the Hill on Madison in midtown for an authentic italian deli sandwich, and MY favorite - Rendezvous for dry ribs and a sausage and cheese platter (but then you need to try Corkys and Jim Neely's Interstate barbecue to be able to choose your favorite!).

I was searching for a hotel in downtown Memphis this past weekend, and chose the Doubletree over the Peabody Hampton. From reading some on this forum, I wish I had chosen the Hampton. The Doubletree was $209/night, whereas the Hampton was $189/night for that particular weekend. I chose the Doubletree, but the room I got was a tiny, interior room with poor lighting and a less than sizable bathroom. Having now read some Orbitz reviews, the Doubletree got 3/5 while the Hampton has 5/5. Just a heads up to anyone planning on booking in Memphis.

The Double tree use to be a Ramada or Radisson they just converted it. I think it has been less then a year. IT does have a great location, but I prefer the Westin, if Downtown and the ES, Shady Grove if in Germantown.

Our family stayed at the Hampton Inn Peabody in October 2006. Don't be put off because it's a Hampton with relatively high prices. It has a great location and its just around the corner from Beale Street. We liked eating at the Blues City Cafe. We also liked Mud Island River Park, Sun Studio, and Graceland.

Very Quickly...$120 is an absolute steal. You will love the location if you're there for a good time or have business downtown. The atmosphere is fun, the balconies are great, and $120 is really good for downtown Memphis unless you want to count the few in the part of downtown that is "dark" at night.

Also to add:

Rendezvous is good for dry ribs and for just being able to say you ate there. Good atmosphere and fun.

For the best BBQ nachos, I recommend the Rum Boogie Cafe on Beale Street.

Avoid Pig on Beale.

If you want really good BBQ, most people say that Cozy Corner is the best. It's off the beaten path, but it's a very quick drive/cab from the downtown Hampton.

Added Tip: If you're in Memphis for a good time, see if you can get a room with the balcony facing south. If you need to sleep for a meeting the next day, I'd recommend that you get a balcony that faces east. This will probably only matter on Thurs-Sun, though.
