The Copthorne & Sudima near the airport are open. Also, The George, on the outskirts of the CBD is very good and still open - this would be my preference, Copthorne next. I haven't stayed at Sudima, but it looks run-down

Was in CHC a few weeks back. There are lots of places open (see Wotif), but room rates are surprisingly high, since much of the accommodation has been taken up either by locals whose houses were badly damaged or by tradies in town to repair the damage -- nearly all the motels on the outskirts of town sport "No Vacancy" signs.

How much if any of the CBd has been reopened. I've also read there are still a lot of aftershocks occurring in the area.

Not a lot. A small section of one main street opened 10 days ago with temporary shops. Other buildings are starting to open after repairs. And some recently closed (that were still occupied) after detailed engineering inspection deemed them to be unsafe or major repairs / strengthening are needed. Many places outside the CBD never closed or closed for a short time. Its not good.

Quakes still happen. Been over 7500 since Sept 4 2010 (http://www.geonet.org.nz/var/storage/images/media/images/news/2011/chch_seismicity_to_13_october/58798-1-eng-GB/Chch_Seismicity_to_13_October.jpg). There was mag 5.5 when I was visiting family near Chc Oct 10th (the 8th biggest)

Population of Chc is decreasing.
