View Full Version : Do Asiana over-sell flights?

Currently booked as a party of 4 on 2 bookings in business class on OZ541 ICN-FRA on 5 November as a bmi british midland redemption booking and it has been zero'ed out in all business class booking codes for a few weeks already, with 3 seats left in First. Appreciate that with a week to go that might change but doesn't look likely with Lufthansa also zero'ed out in F & C, and the London bound service similarly full in C.

Do Asiana routinely over-sell flights, and assuming they only bump upwards, do they then look for volunteers to off-load and travel later? I have heard quite a few carriers do not over-sell flights, perhaps Asiana falls into that category.

We could travel later, and would probably quite like to if we can fly the next day and they'll comp the hotel, would give us longer than the 8 hours we already have in Seoul to take a look round. I doubt we'll be automatically considered though, we are checking in 14 hours before the flight from a connecting OZ flight from HKG and after ICN-FRA connecting on again on Lufthansa to Manchester.

Any experiences/advice please share.

Thanks.

In my experience, flying OZ several times a month for the past few years, OZ does not oversell flights. They will have passengers on standby who will be able to fly if there's no-shows and/or space in a higher class cabin whereby they upgrade their elites and use those opened up seats for the standbys. I have never once heard of them look for volunteers to take a later flight or bump any passengers. I wouldn't be surprised if it happens on rare occasions, but it's certainly not standard practice as far as I know. Likewise with most Asian carriers I've flown.

I once was on the waitlist for an OZ flight which was full. I waited for several weeks, then finally a few days before my departure I gave up and booked on another airline. Before I had a chance to call OZ to cancel my waitlist, they called me to tell me a seat had opened up. Oh well, too late. I've been waitlisted a half-dozen or so other times, and those have all cleared. However I don't know if my Diamond+ status helps any in being given priority or not.

Not that I know of. I ask OZ agent each and every time I fly and never heard they oversold.

Unless you can get into OZ's reservation, zero out only means they are not selling, but does it means all seats are occupy ? No, they could have simply blocking out some of the seats.

Just to complete the story, doesn't seem Asiana oversell or very rarely. The flight HKG-ICN was zero'ed out in all fare codes a week before the flight and ended up wiith a couple of spare seats in business class. ICN-FRA was zero'ed out in Business for weeks before the flight and only a few seats in First, ended up with 1 seat spare in Business and full in First.

Was first time on Asiana and whilst the seat in Business wasn't up too much if you wanted to sleep, the service and food were simply fantastic, a truly indulgent flight and very much enjoyed!

Great job Asiana! ^^^

Had a similar situation: ICN-BKK zero'd out across the board.. then op-up from coach to business (K fare, *A gold). Who knows..
