Thailand - how to organize last day with late departure?

I am scheduled to visit Bangkok for about 4days and 3 nights in late December. Keeping my fingers crossed that the worst effects of flooding will be mitigated by then. My departure from BKK will be past midnight, and as it is my first and such as short visit, I would like to maximize the last day. So I am wondering what to do with my luggage (including laptop computer): store it at the hotel after regular checkout, find a locker somewhere convenient(worked well in Tokyo), or try to find a hotel with late checkout or reduced day rate (maybe until 8pm?). What's the best late departure solution for Bangkok?

If the hotel is a decent one, I'd store it at the hotel and just have a day-pack with me.

If you don't have one yet, you should consider getting luggage straps with locks (http://www.amazon.com/Victorinox-Travel-Approved-Lockable-Luggage/dp/B003JH7ICE/ref=pd_sbs_hg_1) if you're going to store luggage for considerable periods of time.

It won't defeat a determined thief, but it will help against casual theft.

Bangkok will be fine by then. Stay at a decent hotel near BTS or MRT and leave it with the bellmen. I've done it a million times and never had anything taken, because there was nothing worth taking. If you love the computer, bring it with you. Around Christmas I doubt you'll get a good 1/2 day rate. The flood may change their minds though. I know some fairly new 3 star hotels near BTS, with a room safe for $30 day. PM me if you want to go that route. See some sites, get a 2 hr massage, eat some food, have some cocktails, eat more food, have more cocktails, go back to the hotel, get your stuff, and head to BKK. wj

That sounds eerily like my daily routine when in Bangkok.

All the "big name" hotels will allow you to stay till 4pm, I leave at 6pm, can't see you having a problem, usually at no charge. Hotels are businesses so they all should allow you to stay later at a charge. I would think 6pm is ok for you, leave your bags with the front door after check out, have a bite to eat, then get a cab around 7.30pm to the airport. If you are not familar with BKK, it can take a while to get through the rigamarole, then you have to find a comfy spot to rest

Thanks, my return will be in TG F so I intend to utilize the lounge facilities and massage that supposedly are very fine.

Leaving for BKK at 7:30 is insane (unless you're walking (swimming) there). He's leaving after midnight. Of course there's the allure of the Thai F Lounge - nah, leave at least 2 hrs later. I'd much rather be in Bangkok than BKK. wj

So long as you specify exactly how much alcohol to include in your drink, the F lounge serves much better cocktails than anything you'll get in town. :D

Without specifying you'll get the 'touch of alcohol plus lots of mixer' that is commonly served.

Given this, and your predilictions, the F lounge can be a good place to while away some time.

+1

imho the best way to spend an easy and relaxing day in Bangkok. Just enjoy whatever you want to do and don't waste any time thinking about the safety of your luggage

Here's a well located, decent, and cheap joint to dump your crap while you're out and about. You can even take the train to BKK easily from there. LINK: http://www.oamhotels.com/citylodge19/. Shop around a bit and you won't have to pay more than 1200 (ai). wj

In the past, I have booked at one of the IBIS hotels for my last day/first night. One on Sukhumvit, one on Silom, another by the river. Often no more than 1200++, sometimes less.

Some Bangkok hotels will allow you to extend your last day (until 8pm) for 50% of the nightly rate. Ask for the "day rate." Works great for those flights that depart at midnight. ^

Best option. Maybe e-mail the hotel 1st to see what the cost is. wj
